Raymond Hunt Associates and first built in 1978.[1][2] ProductionThe design was built by O'Day Corp. (owned by Bangor Punta and later Lear Siegler) in the United States between 1978 and 1986, but it is now out of production. A total of 507 examples were completed.[1][3][4] DesignThe O'Day 28 is a small recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a slightly reverse transom, an internally-mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a wheel and a fixed fin keel or centerboard. It displaces {{convert|7300|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and carries {{convert|2550|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} of ballast. Starting with serial number 323, produced in 1980, the boats displace {{convert|7450|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and have a slightly shorter waterline length.[1] The keel-equipped version of the boat has a draft of {{convert|4.50|ft|m|abbr=on}}, while the centerboard-equipped version has a draft of {{convert|6.83|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the centerboard extended and {{convert|3.25|ft|m|abbr=on}} with it retracted, allowing beaching or ground transportation on a trailer. In later production the centerboard version was replaced by a shoal draft keel model with a draft of {{convert|3.67|ft|m|abbr=on}}. A deep keel version was also produced with a draft of {{convert|4.67|ft|m|abbr=on}}. There was also a tall mast version, with a mast about {{convert|2.00|ft|m|abbr=on}} higher.[1] The boat is fitted with a Universal 12 {{convert|10|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} diesel engine. The fuel tank holds {{convert|18|u.s.gal}} and the fresh water tank has a capacity of {{convert|25|u.s.gal}}.[1] The design has a hull speed of {{convert|6.42|kn|km/h|2|abbr=on}}.
