The Ohio Falls Iron Works were located on Water Street between W. 4th and 5th Streets in New Albany, Indiana.[1] There were merchants for bar and bridge iron, locomotive, car, wagon, plow and other dimension irons.[2]

History

The industrial company was founded in 1867 by W. C. DePauw, President; Peter R. Stoy, Vice-President and Treasurer and John McCullough. One of the founders, W. C. DePauw, was the same who made the American Plate Glass Works a success. Mr. Peter R. Stoy was from New Albany, who for forty-five years conducted a hardware house there. John McCullough was a progressive farmer and capitalist.[2]

The company was incorporated in 1867 with a paid-up capital of $200,000. The works were among the largest in the West, covering 260 x 400 feet of ground, the buildings equipped with steam power and a full complement of machinery. The capacity was 8,000 to 10,000 tons per annum of finished goods, embracing every description of merchant, bar, bridge, car, wagon, plow and dimension irons generally. Some 225 skilled iron-workers, laborers, etc., were employed, the payrolls footing up from $1,800 to $2,000 per week.[2]

The works had an immense trade, extending all over the continent, their products ranking with those of the most celebrated manufacturers.[2] In a circular to the trade the company say:

"Established in 1867, we have gone on from year to year adding facility to facility, enabling us to more fully meet the wants of our customers, and now think we can as promptly and satisfactorily fill your valued orders as any iron manufactory in the country."[2]

"We carry at all seasons from 600 to 1,000 tons manufactured iron, from which to draw in filling hurried orders. Referring you to the past as a guarantee for the future, we respectfully ask a continuance of your patronage."[2]
