It was based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was the first commercially successful Brazilian satirical magazine during the Republican regime.[1] History and profileO Malho was established in 1902[2] and the first issue was published on 20 September 1902.[3][3] Its founders were Luis Bartholomeu Antonio Agnello de Souza e Silva, a member of the Brazilian Parliament and Antonio Azeredo, a senator.[1] The magazine was headquartered in Rio de Janeiro and was published on a weekly basis.[4] Although the magazine targeted men and women from different social classes,[7] it basically targeted the working-class readers.[1] During the initial years French artist Crispino do Amaral was the main caricaturist of the magazine.[3] Antonio Leal served as the photographer of the magazine.[5] The company, which published O Malho, namely the O Malho Group, also published a children's and comics magazine, O Tico Tico.[6]O Malho was the first Brazilian magazine with colored pages.[7] The magazine focused on in humor and political satire.[8] It contained caricatures and other satirical materials.[1] The magazine also featured musical scores by composers, poems and chronicles.[4] From its start in 1902 to 1926 the magazine regularly featured piano music related articles in two pages.[9] The work by Elda Coelho on music was covered in the magazine.[9]Sabino Barroso, president of the Chamber of Deputies, resigned from office due to satirical publications about him in the magazine.[2][3] In March 1906 O Malho sold 40,000 copies.[1] It folded in January 1954.[2][4][3] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite journal|author=Felipe Botelho Correa|title=The Readership of Caricatures in the Brazilian Belle Époque: the Case of the Illustrated Magazine Careta (1908-1922)|journal=Patrimônio e Memória|date=January 2012|volume=8|issue=1|url=http://pem.assis.unesp.br/index.php/pem/article/view/40/40|accessdate=18 February 2017}} 2. ^1 2 {{cite web|author1=Rodolfo Espinoza|title=Brazil Culture|url=http://www.brazzil.com/p06jun99.htm|work=Brazzil|accessdate=18 February 2017|date=June 1999}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|title=Malho, O|url=http://cpdoc.fgv.br/sites/default/files/verbetes/primeira-republica/MALHO,%20O.pdf|work=O Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação de História Contemporânea do Brasil|accessdate=18 February 2017}} 4. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|author=Eric Lana|title=Partituras de O Malho e Seu Leitor-Modelo|url=https://www.academia.edu/11305944/PARTITURAS_DE_O_MALHO_E_SEU_LEITOR-MODELO|publisher=Academia|accessdate=18 February 2017|language=Portuguese|date=1 April 2011}} 5. ^{{cite book|author=Randal Johnson|title=The Film Industry in Brazil: Culture and the State|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=_9FG2vKEpGoC&pg=PA28|accessdate=18 February 2017|date=15 April 1987|publisher=University of Pittsburgh Press|isbn=978-0-8229-7644-8|page=28}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Comics: the early editorial market in Brazil (Daniel Serravalle de Sá 2008)|url=http://studiesinfiction.blogspot.com.tr/2009/08/comics-early-editorial-market-in-brazil.html|work=Studies in Fiction|accessdate=18 February 2017|date=24 August 2009}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Serialized Publications|url=https://www.bn.gov.br/en/explore/heritage/serialized-publications|work=Bibliotica Nacional|accessdate=18 February 2017}} 8. ^{{cite journal|author1=James N.
