{{Orphan|date=March 2018}}Omar Hamdi (born 1990)[1] is a British comedian and television host. His parents are originally from Egypt, having moved to the UK in the 1970s.[2] He is best-known for TV hosting on BBC One, including The One Show,[3] and the BAFTA-winning show X-Ray.[4] His appearances on the show have received national press attention, including being reported on by The Guardian[5] and The Daily Mirror.[6]

Early life

Hamdi is a native of Cardiff, Wales.[7] He initially got into comedy through his ex girlfriend who suggested that he use comedy as an outlet for his energy.[7]

Career

He is a headlining comic, appearing at major comedy clubs in the UK[8] including The Comedy Store,[9] as well as at The Royal Albert Hall.[10] He has also headlined on TV stand-up shows produced by the BBC.[11] His stand-up comedy is autobiographical, including varying perspectives on nationality, gender and love,[12] as well as a satirical take on the big issues facing the world.[13]

He began performing stand-up shortly after graduating from Leeds University.[14] He made his national TV debut in 2014, performing stand-up on Seann Walsh's late night show.[15] He also starred in the chat show "Free Speech", where he performed topical satire alongside political leader Leanne Wood and campaigner Laura Bates, hosted by Rick Edwards and Tina Daheley.[16]

In 2016 he guest starred in the BBC One political talk show Sunday Morning Live. His appearance led to a public disagreement between him and Lily Allen.[17]

In 2016 he went back to school for reality show "Search For A*" with other celebrities and BBC TV hosts, which included filming in Moscow. He claims the experience of walking into a classroom again made him ‘physically sick’.[18] He also starred in the BBC One show "The Really Welsh Christmas Quiz".[19] In 2017 he presented a TV special from Nice, France about the anniversary of the 2016 Nice Truck attack, including interviews with survivors.[20]

In 2017 he co-hosted, alongside Cerys Matthews and Kate Humble, the BBC's TV coverage of The Royal Welsh Show.[21]

In 2018 he starred in the BBC One special "The Miners Who Made Us", where he was challenged to perform a stand up show in front of an audience of former coal miners.[22]

He has conducted sometimes controversial celebrity interviews with personalities such as former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson,[23] politician and reality star George Galloway,[24] and the original Darth Vader, actor David Prowse.[25] In his 2016 interview with Hamdi, George Galloway revealed for the first time details of the sexual abuse he suffered as a child at the hands of an army officer.[24]

Writing career

As well as TV hosting and stand-up, he writes for newspapers and magazines, and has been published in two books, Pause for Thought[26] and Don't Panic I'm Islamic.[27] For the latter he undertook a stand-up and book tour around the UK,[28] after it was selected as Sunday Times Humour Book of the Year.[29] He has also written and presented on four series of BBC Radio 2’s award-winning show Pause for Thought.[30] He claims to rarely watch stand-up on television,[1] or any television at all.[11]
