Origo is a leading news website in Hungary. The country's main telecoms company, Magyar Telekom, created the website in the late 1990s to incentivize Internet service subscriptions. Origo became known for investigations into the populist, far-right government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. In 2013, in indirect exchange for telecom license renewals needed by Magyar Telekom, Origo{{'s}} coverage became increasingly directed by Orbán-affiliated consultants. Its editor-in-chief resigned in protest. His successor was fired the next year for continuing an investigation into extravagant travel expenses of János Lázár, Orbán's second-in-command. The investigation had embarrassed the telecoms company, which had and continued to negotiate its telecom licenses and contracts with Lázár. Several of the website's best reporters also resigned in protest. The telecoms company sought to sell the website, which had become a public relations and political liability. New Wave Media won the bid in late 2015, financed with money from state and state-allied banks, though nominally private.[1] The website's news is no longer critical of Orbán's government[2] and now publishes stories that mirror the government's position. New Wave is run by a former Orbán finance minister, and the website's revenues have tripled since its acquisition with a rise in government advertisement revenue.{{r|NYT: how}}
