It was founded under the name "Heimattiergarten", and opened during the summer of 1936. Almost 3000 animals from ca 300 species can be seen on the {{convert|23.5|ha|km2|abbr=on}} land.[2] It is famous for housing the Grolar Bear.[3] This brought about many scientific inquiries into the zoo.[4] During 2010 865.000 visitors entered the gates, and in 2011 over 1.030.000 persons visited Zoo Osnabrück.
