It spans both on- and off-shore, across the boundary between the states of South Australia and Victoria and reaches across the western end of Bass Strait to the northwestern corner of Tasmania. It is a source of natural gas. The Otway Basin dates from the Jurassic to late Cretaceous periods and is one of a number of basins underlying the Tertiary period Gambier Basin.[1] Along the coast, the basin extends from near Geelong in Victoria to Cape Jaffa in South Australia but it extends further west offshore. A number of commercial gas fields have been discovered and exploited, but no significant oil deposits have been found.[2] Beach Energy has operations in Victoria in the Halladale and Speculant onshore fields and Geographe and Thylacine offshore fields.
