He is known for his work on the bioinformatics tools GLIMMER and MUMmer.[1][2] EducationWhite studied biotechnology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, gaining a bachelor of science degree in 1985. He later studied with Christopher A. Fields at New Mexico State University, gaining his PhD in molecular biology in 1992.[3][4] ResearchFrom 1992-1994, White was a postdoctoral fellow in the Genome Informatics department at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in Rockville, Maryland. This was followed by a period as a collaborative investigator in the Department of Bioinformatics at TIGR.[3] While at TIGR, White was one of the developers of the GLIMMER (Gene Locator and Interpolated Markov ModelER) gene discovery algorithm, alongside Steven Salzberg and colleagues.[5][6][7] Salzberg and White were also involved in the development of the MUMmer software for sequence alignment.[8] White became Director of Bioinformatics at TIGR in 2000.[3] He has also been involved in the National Institutes of Health Human Microbiome Project, where he was principle investigator of the Data Analysis and Coordination Center for the first phase of the project.[9][10] Awards and honorsIn 2015, White was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award in Bioinformatics for his promotion of free and open-access materials and methods in the life sciences.[10][11] References1. ^{{Google Scholar id|uwYSPwUAAAAJ}} {{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:White, Owen}}2. ^{{DBLP|95/1178}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=University of Maryland School of Medicine|url=http://news.medschool.umaryland.edu/?a=2349&z=41|website=news.medschool.umaryland.edu|accessdate=15 September 2017}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Recent Graduates {{!}} Molecular Biology|url=https://molb.research.nmsu.edu/content/recent-graduates|website=molb.research.nmsu.edu|accessdate=15 September 2017}} 5. ^{{cite journal|last1=Salzberg|first1=SL|last2=Delcher|first2=AL|last3=Kasif|first3=S|last4=White|first4=O|title=Microbial gene identification using interpolated Markov models.|journal=Nucleic Acids Research|date=15 January 1998|volume=26|issue=2|pages=544–8|pmid=9421513}} 6. ^{{cite journal|last1=Delcher|first1=AL|last2=Harmon|first2=D|last3=Kasif|first3=S|last4=White|first4=O|last5=Salzberg|first5=SL|title=Improved microbial gene identification with GLIMMER.|journal=Nucleic Acids Research|date=1 December 1999|volume=27|issue=23|pages=4636–41|pmid=10556321}} 7. ^{{cite book|last1=Pevsner|first1=Jonathan|title=Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics|date=2015|publisher=John Wiley & Sons|isbn=9781118581766|page=821|edition=3rd}} 8. ^{{cite journal|last1=Delcher|first1=A.
