{{orphan|date=May 2017}}{{Orphan|date=December 2016}}Pablo Artal (born in Zaragoza, June 12, 1961) is a Spanish physicist and full professor specialized in optics at the University of Murcia, as well as in the development and application of new techniques in human vision research. He received the 'Rey Jaime I' Award for New Technologies in 2015.[1][2]

Biography

After earning a MSc degree in Physics from the University of Zaragoza, he joined the Institute of Optics of the Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) as a PhD student. After his doctorate he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge, UK and the Institut d'Optique, Orsay (France).

Since 1994 he has been the first Full Professor of Optics at the University of Murcia, and was the funder of the Optics Laboratory.[2][3] He is also a member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the European Optical Society (EOS). He is member of the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia and the Academy of Medicine. He was awarded with the Medal Edwin H. Land (2013) in recognition of his scientific contributions to the advancement of diagnostic and correction alternatives in visual optics. He received the 'Rey Jaime I' Award for New Technologies in 2015. The mention states that he hold more than 20 international patents and was founder of five companies in the field of optics... [which] has helped to improve the quality of life of life of people around the world." In May 2016, he announced that he dedicated 20,000 of the 100,000 euros obtained from the Rey Jaime I to support ten scholarships for the most talented undergraduate students enrolled in the science degrees at the University of Murcia.[4][5]

Scientific achievements

Founder and director of the Laboratory of Optics at the University of Murcia since 2004, Pablo Artal has published over 200 research articles, he has presented more than 650 lectures at international meetings and conferences and has conducted about 300 seminars in research centers around the world. His articles exceed 7.500 citations (with an h-index of 45). He was the supervisor of 24 doctoral students and has co-founded technology companies (among them Voptica SL and Visiometrics SL). He has been editor of the Journal of the Optical Society of America and the Journal of Vision. In 2013 he was the recipient of an ''Advanced Grant'' of the European Research Council (ERC). He developed a number of advances in the methods for studying the optics of the eye and has contributed substantially to the understanding of the factors that limit human visual resolution. Several of his proposed solutions and instrument are currently in use in the clinical practice in ophthalmology. He co-invented intraocular lenses correcting for the corneal spherical aberration that provides improved quality of vision to millions of patients over the world
