The area was famous for grain production, and dozens of merchants specialized in trading rye and wheat, as well as in grain processing. Before the 1917 revolution, there were lots of barns, granaries, warehouses and grain mills on the Don embankment. Merchant Pyotr Fyodorovich Posokhov, the largest roller mill with the cutting-edge equipment at the bottom of Mill Descent. Posokhov’s contribution into supplying the city of Rostov and local bakeries with flour was so impressive, that Mill Descent was named after Posokhov in 1888.[2]In 1889 the mill and its premises was acquired by a new owner – a merchant Elpidifor Trofphimovich Paramonov. Under the new management, the mill was in operation for seven years to be destroyed by the great fire in 1896. The prices for bread skyrocketed. The story is documented in the book “in old Rostov” by S.D. Shevtsov, published in 1971. Paramonov’s warehouses ruinsIt took Paramonov two years to rebuild the six-storeyed construction, destroyed by the fire, and install new equipment. The restored mill became the largest state-of-the art grain processing operation in the Russian Empire. Its capacity was one hundred tonnes of grain in twenty-four hours. The mill exported production all over Russia and to Italy, Germany, Greece, Turkey, the Balkan countries. To ship his grain to the customers without middlemen, Paramonov bought a fleet of steamers. E.T. Paramonov was nicknamed “ the bread/grain king of Russia”, and Rostov-on-Don – “the granary of the Empire”. At the heart of the grain empire was the six-storeyed mill on the bank of the Don river. Next to the mill, on Beregovaya Street, Paramonov built warehouses. The location was very good because steamers moored close by – on the Don river. The warehouses were nicknamed after Paramonov.[3] After the October Revolution, the mill was nationalized by the Bolsheviks and got a new name “ Mill number One of Soyuz Khleb”, later –“state-run Mill number One”. The mill was in operation until February 7, 1930 when a disaster occurred. There was a mighty explosion at the time of night shift. Flour dust exploded in the production shop and a great fire started. It took several days to put out the fire. The tragedy was caused by a random sparkle or a cigarette butt, left burning, when the flour dust, suspended in the air detonated. In the same year, Mill descent changed its name and became “ The 7th February Street”.[4] The building has not been restored and is still in ruins. There is a reference to the mill in building №30 on Nizhneboulvarnaya Street, which is entered in the list of architectural landmarks as "the house for the staff of the mill owned by Posokhov, 1879". It may be of interest that in an engine for a mill, which used to belong to Paramonov, was found in the village of Ryabichev, in Volgodonsky District. The engine was restored and is in good condition, ready to operate.
