Along with Dadar, it serves as a transfer point between the two core railway lines of Mumbai. The station is known as "Parel" on the Central line and "Prabhadevi" on the Western line. It is the closest station to Prabhadevi, on the Mahim Bay.[1] This station has become an increasingly important transfer point between the Central and Western lines, primarily aided by commuter traffic to avoid transferring at the historically much more crowded Dadar station. However, in recent years, the sole footbridge linking the two lines has itself become overcrowded, and there are plans to add new passenger bridges between the two lines, and perhaps even expand the platforms at the station.[2] Accident and incidentsOn 29 September 2017, a stampede killed 23 people on North FOB staircase to the exit at Prabhadevi Railway Station of Western Railways. It was the only FOB which connects Prabhadevi Railway Station with Parel Railway Station making it crowded especially during rush peak hour. People were waiting on the staircase of the FOB for the suddenly started rain to stop when a rumour of FOB getting collapse was spread among people standing on FOB causing a stampede. It happened during the 9th Day of Navratri Festivals when flower vendors were carrying flowers in bulk to sold it in Dadar Flower Market which is nearest to Prabhadevi Railway Station. Someone in crowd shouted "Ful Giraa (Flowers fallen down)" which people mistakenly heard as "Pul Giraa (Bridge fallen down)". Later, Western Railways & Indian Army each constructed a new FOB connecting Prabhadevi & Parel Railway Station within short period compared to the time taken by railways to reduce the passengers load on North FOB. Indian Army also constructed new FOB at Currey Road railway station & Ambivli railway station of Central Railways Line along with Prabhadevi railway station.
