The act governs spending, expenses and entitlements for Australian Members of Parliament and Senators. CoverageThe Parliamentary Entitlements Act entitles MPs and Senators to have their travel expenses paid for. This included travel to and from their divisions and Parliament. The act also extends to any travel providing they are on Parliamentary business.[1] It also entitles them to expenses for overseas visits, such as accommodation, food, clothing and medical coverage however these are limited to a set number each year.[1] 2018 publicitySchedule 1.1.2 of the Parliamentary Entitlements Act states that MPs are required to provide "Australian flags and printed material related to national symbols, for presentation to constituents".[2] This was later clarified in the Constituents Request Program to include booklets on Australian symbols and flags, CDs and DVDs of the national anthem: "Advance Australia Fair" and official portraits of the Queen of Australia, Elizabeth II, as well as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.[3] In August 2018, a Vice News article publicised the little known right for Australians to have a free portrait of the Queen.[4] In the following days, MPs received a large increase in requests for portraits of the Queen, some of whom had never received such a request before.[5] Some MPs were critical of the moves with Tim Watts calling it "excellent trolling" and Terri Butler stating she was thinking of sending out pictures of Beyoncé instead.[5] Nonetheless, MPs still supplied the portraits, though some requested that their constituents come to their office in order to save money on postage (which is not covered by the Parliamentary Entitlements Act).[6] Others supplemented the portrait by including Australian Republic Movement literature.[7] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-01-09/politicians-entitlements-and-why-they-are-under-fire/8170082 |title=Explained: Politicians' entitlements rules and why they're under fire |publisher=ABC News |date= |accessdate=2018-08-16}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/C2016C00534 |title=Parliamentary Entitlements Act 1990 |publisher=Legislation.gov.au |date= |accessdate=2018-08-16}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://maps.finance.gov.au/Guidance/Annual_Budget_for_Office_Expenses/Nationhood_Material |title=Nationhood Material |publisher=Government of Australia |date=2018-06-18 |accessdate=2018-08-16}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/9kmzv5/all-australian-citizens-are-legally-entitled-to-a-portrait-of-the-queen |title=All Australian Citizens Are Legally Entitled to a Portrait of the Queen |publisher=Vice News |date= |accessdate=2018-08-16}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-45139047 |title=Australian MPs field sudden requests for Queen portraits |publisher=BBC News |date=2018-08-10 |accessdate=2018-08-16}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/yes-you-re-entitled-to-a-free-portrait-of-the-queen-but-should-you-get-one-20180809-p4zwlt.html |title=Yes, you're entitled to a free portrait of the Queen.
