The town was founded on February 13, 2006 when the towns of Echigawa and Hatashō merged. The name "Aishō" combines the first character in {{Nihongo|"Echigawa"|愛知川}} and the second character in {{Nihongo|"Hatashō"|秦荘}}. As of October 2016, the town has an estimated population of 20,730. The total area is 37.98 km². Neighboring communitiesThe town borders the cities of Hikone and Higashiōmi and the towns of Kōra, Taga and Toyosato in Inukami District.
