{{Italic title}}Peasant Coffin ({{lang-pl|Trumna chłopska}}) is an oil painting by Aleksander Gierymski.[1]

During his stay in Krakow in 1893 and 1894. Gierymski frequented Włodzimierz Tetmajer, who lived in Bronowice Małe. At that time Aleksander Gierymski drew first sketches for Peasant Coffin. This painting was the last of Gierymski's figural compositions. Later Gierymski painted only landscapes and vedutas. {{cn|date=November 2018}}

The painting is in the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw.[2]

Composition and chiaroscuro

{{unreferenced-section|date=November 2018}}

The picture has a close and loose composition. In this scene we observe a static composition. In the foreground we can see an elderly man and a woman, with a dog in front of them. In the background there is a white, wooden wall. A coffin is leaning against the wall. Depending on the point of view the centre of the composition is either the old woman or the top of the coffin. There are two reasons for that. Both the woman and the coffin are positioned very close to each other. What is more, the colours of both objects are saturated. The woman is wearing a red headscarf with a blue line, the material looks like tartan. There is a white cross on the coffin's lid. When we look at the painting, first we notice the headscarf then the woman's face and the top of the coffin.

The source of light is located outside the painting, the light is scattered. Light is natural and its source is undefined.

Colouring

{{unreferenced-section|date=November 2018}}

The colour of the headscarf is contrasted with the colour of the coffin's lid. We observe whole gamut of colours, because we see warm and cold colours. Dominant of composition is identical with dominant colouring. Colours are subdued and the painter used local colours. Gierymski made the masterpiece in a realistic style.

Atmosphere

Andrzej Wajda wrote:
I don't know picture in Polish art, where occurrence of tragedy is equally strong. Exactly tragedy, not drama. In this painting is sprit of ancient tragedy, which always reaches its conclusion, in full daylight, in front of the neighbours, in front of the house.[3]
