Peter Doimi De Frankopan Subic[1] (born 22 March 1971)[2] is a British historian.

Early life and education

Frankopan is the second of five children born to Yugoslavia-born Croatian aristocrat Louis Doimi de Lupis, who emigrated to the United Kingdom after World War II and legally adopted the surname Frankopan in 2000, and Swedish-born barrister and professor of international law Ingrid Detter de Frankopan. His elder sister is Lady Nicholas Windsor.[3]

He attended Eton College[4] and then received a degree in Byzantine history from Jesus College, Cambridge before getting his D.Phil at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He is a senior research fellow at Worcester College, Oxford, and director of the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research.[5]

Writings

In 2015, his book A New History of the World was published. The Telegraph praised it as a "charismatic and essential book",[6] while The Guardian called it "ambitious" and "full of insight but let down by factual errors".[7] His follow-up book,The New Silk Roads: The Present and Future of the World (Bloomsbury Publishing), was published in 2018.

He also wrote the 2012 book The First Crusade: The Call from the East.[8]

Family name

In 2000, his father, born Louis Doimi de Lupis, controversially assumed the surname "Frankopan" under British Civil law, having previously done so with the surnames "Šubić" and "Zrinski", names associated with several lines of Croatian feudal nobility which died out in 17th and 18th century.[9][10] Having previously adopted the title of "Count",[11] their family later also added the title of "Prince" although neither of the noble families mentioned ever used that royal title (they were in Latin,[12][13][14] Croatian,[15][16][17] Hungarian[18][19][20] and Italian[21][22][23] historical documents styled as Counts). The Croatian Nobility Association expelled the Doimi de Lupis family from their membership, calling the name reverting a falsification.[24]

Nevertheless, he has continued to occasionally style himself Prince, and his wife, Jessica Sainsbury, Princess.[25]

Personal life

He has been president of the Croatian Cricket Federation since the mid-1990s and has played for the Croatian national team. In 2015, he said "That’s the achievement I’m proudest of – playing cricket for my country."[26] He also plays for the Authors XI cricket team with other British writers.[27]

He and his wife, grocery heiress Jessica (née) Sainsbury, have four children and live in Oxford.[28] They own and operate a chain of luxury hotels called A Curious Group of Hotels, which includes venues in the Cotswolds, Amsterdam and Paris.[29]
