Philip Phillips is an award winning theoretical condensed matter physicist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Chaimpaign. His work has spanned the study of high temperature superconductivy in the cuprates to the application of gauge-gravity duality to strongly correlated quantum matter.

Early life and education

Phillips was born Scarborough, Tobago in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago[1]. He attended Walla Walla College, graduating with a B.A. degree in chemistry and mathematics in 1979. In 1982, he received his Ph. D. in physics from the University of Washington[2].

Professional career

After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California at Berkeley, he joined the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1984-1993). After this, he moved to the University of Illinois.[3]

Major accomplishments

In 2000, professor Phillips received the prestigious Edward Bouchet award from the American Physical Society for "For opening new vistas in the study of disordered and strongly correlated condensed matter physics, including the random dimer model and the size dependence of the Kondo effect."[4]. In 2002, he became a fellow of the American Physical Society[5]. In 2012 he became a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science[6].
