It resembles many small species of Melaleuca, mainly differing in the way its anthers are attached at the top of the stamens. In Phymatocarpus they are attached at their base and open at the other end through two slits. It is a shrub with many small heads of pink to purple flowers, often covering the plant for several weeks in October. DescriptionPhymatocarpus maxwellii is an erect to spreading shrub which sometimes grows to a height and width of {{convert|2.5|m|ft|sigfig=1}}. The leaves are broad egg-shaped, {{convert|4-6|mm|in|sigfig=1}} long, often curved and stiff but not prickly.[1][2][3]The flowers are pink to purple and are arranged in dense, roughly spherical heads about {{convert|10|mm|in|sigfig=1}} in diameter on the ends of branches which continue to grow after flowering. There are 5 sepals, 5 petals and 5 bundles of stamens. It can be distinguished from the other two species of Phymatocarpus by it lack of a ring of stamens - both the others have the stamens joined in a ring at their bases.[4] Flowering occurs from August to November and is followed by fruits which are woody capsules. The individual capsules are about {{convert|2.5|mm|in|sigfig=1}} in diameter and are arranged in clusters which are rough or lumpy on the outer surface.[1][2][3] Taxonomy and namingPhymatocarpus maxwellii was first formally described in 1875 by Ferdinand von Mueller in Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae.[5][6] The specific epithet (maxwellii) honours the botanical collector George Maxwell, the collector of the type specimen.[7]Distribution and habitatPhymatocarpus maxwellii occurs in and between the Mount Barker East and the Israelite Bay districts[8] in the Coolgardie, Esperance Plains and Mallee biogeographic regions.[9] It grows in a wide range of situations but mostly in sand on sandplains and depressions that are wet in winter.[10]ConservationPhymatocarpus maxwellii is classified as "not threatened" by the Western Australian government Department of Parks and Wildlife.[9]References1. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Corrick|first1=Margaret G.|last2=Fuhrer|first2=Bruce A.|title=Wildflowers of southern Western Australia|date=2009|publisher=Rosenberg Pub.|location=[Kenthurst, N.S.W.]|isbn=9781877058844|page=132|edition=3rd|url=https://books.google.com.au/books?id=gzgsXMXxAd0C&pg=PA132&lpg=PA132&dq=Melaleuca+concreta&source=bl&ots=407wX3sR94&sig=FiXME5KKCWtqhTjPxoqlZKXY7Cg&hl=en&sa=X&ei=MWMPVczYNtjl8AXm3IHwBw&ved=0CDoQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=Melaleuca%20concreta&f=false|accessdate=30 August 2015}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q15378019}}2. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Archer|first1=William|title=Phymatocarpus maxwellii|url=http://esperancewildflowers.blogspot.com.au/2009/03/phymatocarpus-maxwellii.html|publisher=Esperance Wildflowers|accessdate=30 August 2015}} 3. ^1 {{cite book|last1=von Mueller|first1=Ferdinand|title=Fragmenta phytographiae Australiae|date=1875|location=Melbourne|pages=45–46|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/7226#page/46/mode/1up|accessdate=30 August 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Species of Phymatocarpus|url=http://keybase.rbg.vic.gov.au/keys/show/1440|publisher=Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria|accessdate=23 March 2018}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=von Mueller|first1=Ferdinand|title=Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae (Volume 9)|date=1875|location=Melbourne|pages=45–46|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/7226#page/46/mode/1up|accessdate=30 August 2015}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Phymatocarpus maxwellii|url=https://biodiversity.org.au/boa/instance/apni/522212|publisher=APNI|accessdate=30 August 2015}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Maxwell, George (1804 - 1880)|url=http://www.cpbr.gov.au/biography/maxwell-george.html|publisher=Australian National Botanic Garden|accessdate=30 August 2015}} 8. ^{{cite journal|last1=Craven|first1=Lyndley A.|title=A New Species of Phymatocarpus (Myrtaceae) from Southwestern Australia|journal=Muelleria|date=1999|volume=12|issue=2|pages=133–134|url=https://biodiversity.org.au/images/pnrid-pdf/248705.pdf|accessdate=30 August 2015}} 9. ^1 {{FloraBase|name=Phymatocarpus maxwellii|id = 6007}} 10. ^{{cite book|last1=Paczkowska|first1=Grazyna|last2=Chapman|first2=Alex R.|title=The Western Australian flora : a descriptive catalogue|date=2000|publisher=Wildflower Society of Western Australia|location=Perth|isbn=0646402439|page=400}} 5 : Phymatocarpus|Myrtales of Australia|Flora of Western Australia|Plants described in 1860|Endemic flora of Western Australia |
