The instrument is designed to have the sixteen pianos played simultaneously.[1] HistoryThe first Piano Mill, constructed in Wilson’s Downfall, Northern New South Wales, Australia, was designed by architect Bruce Wolfe specifically for composer Erik Griswold[2]. This structure is a copper clad tower approximately 9m tall with a footprint of 4.5m X 4.5m and its lowest floor is 1.6m above the ground allowing the pianos to be installed post-construction.[3] The mill is equipped with tuned grader blades as chimes and two sonic periscopes. To launch The Piano Mill, Griswold composed a new work, All’s grist that comes to the mill, that responds to various influcences such as architecture, the natural environment and Australia's colonial history.[4][5] It was performed in the Piano Mill on Sunday March 27, 2016, and since that time there have been two subsequent pieces written for the instrument.[6] The first Piano Mill has won awards including a National Commendation at the Australian Institute of Architects 2017 Awards and a National Award for Experimental Music at the 2017 APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards.[7][8] References1. ^{{cite web |work=Resonate Magazine |title=The Piano Mill |location=Australia |publisher=Australian Music Centre |url=http://www.australianmusiccentre.com.au/article/the-piano-mill |date= |access-date= }} 2. ^{{cite book|last1=Wolfe|first1=Bruce|title=The Piano Mill|date=2018|publisher=Uro Publications|location=Melbourne, Australia|isbn=9780994396600|pages=96|url=https://uropublications.com/collections/books-from-uro-publications/products/the-piano-mill}} 3. ^{{cite web|last1=Li|first1=Rosa|title=Piano|url=http://highlifemagazine.net/piano-mill/|website=Australia Highlife Downs Living|publisher=Queensland Magazines}} 4. ^{{cite journal|last1=Griswold|first1=Erik|title=The Piano Mill: Nostalgic Music and Architecture in the Australian Bush|journal=Leonardo Music Journal|date=December 2017|volume=-|issue=27|pages=53–54|url=http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/abs/10.1162/LMJ_a_01014}} 5. ^{{cite web|last1=May|first1=Melissa|title=The Road to The Piano Mill|url=http://www.abc.net.au/classic/new-waves/the-road-to-the-piano-mill/9316766|website=ABC Classic FM|publisher=Australian Broadcasting Corporation}} 6. ^{{cite news|last1=Ward|first1=Donna|title=‘Instrumental’ building at Wilsons Downfall wins music award|url=http://www.tenterfieldstar.com.au/story/4922079/instrumental-building-at-wilsons-downfall-wins-music-award/|agency=Tenterfield Star|publisher=Fairfax Media}} 7. ^{{cite web |work=ArchitectureAU |title=2017 National Architecture Awards: Small Project Architecture Commendation |location=Australia |publisher=Architecture Media |url=https://architectureau.com/articles/2017-national-architecture-awards-small-project-architecture-commendation/ |date= |access-date= }} 8. ^{{cite news|title=Building powered by 16 pianos wins national gong|url=https://www.stanthorpeborderpost.com.au/news/piano-project-claims-top-music-award/3220770/|agency=Stanthope Border Post|publisher=News Corp Australia}} External links
