The Priboy-class ({{lang-ru|Прибой||Surf}}),[1][2] formerly known as Lavina ({{lang-ru|Лавина||Avalanche}}),[3][4] are two designs proposed by the Krylov State Research Center and Nevskoe Design Bureau to built a series of future amphibious assault ships for the Russian Navy.[5][6] The ships are intended as a replacement for two vessels of the French Mistral-class, ordered by Russia in 2011, but rejected to deliver due to alleged Russian involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.[3] The ships are also to be a successor class to the Soviet unrealized Project 11780 LHD program.

History

The two designs were first revealed during the «ARMY-2015» military-technical forum held in June 2015, as analogues to the French Mistral-class of two ships were in 2011 ordered by Russia under a $1.5 billion contract. The order was cancelled in 2015 after the Franch side rejected to proceed with the delivery of the ships due to the ongoing Ukrainian conflict Russia was believed to be involved in.[3] The France subsequently returned Russia about €1.2 billion desposit payed for construction of the two ships.

They were formerly known as "Lavina" for the heavier variant developed by Krylov, displacing about 24,000 tons, and "Priboy" for the smaller one developed by Nevskoe, with a displacement of about 14,000 tons.[5][6] During 2016-2017, both the heavier and lighter variant proposed for the Russian Navy started to publicly appear under a common name "Priboy".

On 25 May 2017, Russian Defence Minister Yury Borisov stated, the construction cycle of the new Russian helicopter carrier would last at least 4 years and that the first such ship will be completed by 2022.[7][8]

In June 2017, vice-president of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Igor Ponomarev said the "Priboy" helicopter carriers were implemented in the Russia's new state armament programme for 2018–2025 and that the construction of the ships could take place either at the Severnaya Verf, Baltic Shipyard or Sevmash.[2]

In July 2017, a member of the Russia's State Duma Dmitry Belik announced, the lead ship of the class will be named Sevastopol, after the city of Sevastopol.[9] The cost for the ship will be about 40 billion RUB ($675 million),[10] and its construction was to began after approval of the Russia's new state armament programme for 2018-2025.[11]

In January 2018, it was reported the Severnaya Verf, Saint Petersburg was chosen for construction of the new Russian helicopter carriers. The first ship of the class is planned to be laid down in 2020 and delivered to the Navy in 2024, followed by the second ship in 2026. However, it's not known which of the two proposed designs will be chosen.[12]

Export

The Krylov has also proposed an export version of the ship, dubbed as "Priboy-E", where the "E" stands for Eksportny ("Export").[13]
