Hammel }} Psychotria elata, commonly known as hot lips[1], hooker's lips[2], or labios de puta[3], is a tropical plant native to rain forests in Central and South American countries such as Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia. It can adapt to temperate climates. It is notable for its distinctly-shaped red bracts. Physical characteristicsP. elata is a shrub typically found in the understory layer of rain forests.[4] This species can infrequently grow higher than 3 meters. The most distinctive features of P. elata are its red bracts, a modified set of leaves. Before its flowers bloom, the bracts resemble a pair of human lips. Its shape attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, which are its primary pollinators. Its flowers are fragrant and white in color, and typically bloom from December to March.[4] P. elata also produces small black or dark blue berries.[2] Conservation statusP. elata has become endangered due to deforestation. The number of this species is quickly decreasing and harshly diminished by climate changes and loss of habitat.[2]UsageThe bark and leaves of P. elata are sometimes used as folk medicine to cure earaches, coughs and skin irritation. The Guna people living in Panama and Colombia have habitually used this flower to cure dyspnea.[2] .
