As with similar orchids, the flowering plants differ from those which are not flowering. The non-flowering plants have a rosette of leaves but the flowering plants lack a rosette and have a single flower with leaves on the flowering spike. This greenhood has a relatively large green, white and reddish-brown self-pollinating flower. DescriptionPterostylis aquilonia is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and when not flowering, a rosette of light green leaves {{convert|5-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|5-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Flowering plants have a single flower {{convert|20-25|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide borne on a spike {{convert|150-200|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} high. The flowers are white, green and reddish-brown. The dorsal sepal and petals are fused, forming a hood or "galea" over the column. The dorsal sepal curves forward and ends with a short point. The lateral sepals are erect with thread-like ends {{convert|22-25|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long with their tips bent forwards. The lateral sepals are held closely against the galea and there is a broad, flat, platform-like sinus between their bases. The labellum is {{convert|11-13|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and brown and slightly protrudes above the sinus. Flowering occurs from May to June.[2]Taxonomy and namingPterostylis aquilonia was first formally described in 1997 by David Jones and Bruce Gray. The description was published in The Orchadian from a specimen collected near Herberton.[3] The specific epithet (aquilonia) is a Latin word meaning "north" or "northern".[4]Distribution and habitatThe northern cobra greenhood grows in forest on the higher parts of the Atherton Tableland.[2] References1. ^{{WCSP | 259892 | Pterostylis aquilonia }} {{Taxonbar|from=Q15491359}}2. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=978-1877069123|page =290}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|title=Pterostylis aquilonia|url=https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/581244|publisher=APNI|accessdate=14 June 2017}} 4. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page =560}} 4 : Pterostylis|Endemic orchids of Australia|Orchids of Queensland|Plants described in 1997 |
