D.L.Jones & M.A.Clem. }} Pterostylis aspera, commonly known as the rough shell orchid, is a species of orchid endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. As with similar greenhoods, the flowering plants differ from those which are not flowering. The non-flowering plants have a rosette of leaves flat on the ground but the flowering plants have a single flower with leaves on the flowering spike. In this common species, the flower is white with green and reddish-brown stripes and a short, straight labellum. DescriptionPterostylis aspera is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and when not flowering, a rosette of bluish-green leaves lying flat on the ground. Each leaf is {{convert|6-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|4-17|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Flowering plants usually only have a single flower {{convert|22-30|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide which leans forwards on a flowering stem {{convert|60-200|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} high. There are between three and five stem leaves {{convert|20-30|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|3-5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide . The flowers are white with green and reddish-brown stripes. The dorsal sepal and petals are fused, forming a hood or "galea" over the column and the dorsal sepal has a sharp point. The lateral sepals are held closely against the galea and have narrow tips {{convert|30-35|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and a broad sinus with a small notch between their bases. The labellum is {{convert|13-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, relatively straight, and only just visible above the sinus. Flowering occurs from May to July.[2][3][4]Taxonomy and namingPterostylis aspera was first formally described in 1989 by David Jones and Mark Clements from a specimen collected near Eaton and the description was published in Australian Orchid Research.[5] The specific epithet (aspera) is a Latin word meaning "rough", "harsh" or "uneven",[6] referring to hairs on the labellum.[3]Distribution and habitatThe rough shell orchid grows in shrubland and woodland between Dongara and Jerramungup in the Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains, Jarrah Forest, Mallee and Swan Coastal Plain biogeographic regions.[2][3][4][7] ConservationPterostylis aspera is listed as "not threatened" by the Government of Western Australia Department of Parks and Wildlife.[7]References1. ^{{WCSP | 170504 | Pterostylis aspera }} {{Taxonbar|from=Q15491774}}2. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=978-1877069123|pages =290–291}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Andrew|last2=Dixon|first2=Kingsley|last3=French|first3=Christopher|last4=Brockman|first4=Garry|title=Field guide to the orchids of Western Australia : the definitive guide to the native orchids of Western Australia|date=2013|publisher=Simon Nevill Publications|isbn=9780980348149|page=346}} 4. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Hoffman|first1=Noel|last2=Brown|first2=Andrew|title=Orchids of South-West Australia.|date=2011|publisher=Noel Hoffman|location=Gooseberry Hill|isbn=9780646562322|page=398|edition=3rd}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|title=Pterostylis aspera|url=https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/486614|publisher=APNI|accessdate=16 June 2017}} 6. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page =669}} 7. ^1 {{FloraBase|name=Pterostylis aspera|id = 15426}} 4 : Pterostylis|Endemic orchids of Australia|Orchids of Western Australia|Plants described in 1989 |
