Milan.[2] After retiring from his sporting career he became a politician and was a member of Alþingi for 15 years, serving as Minister of Finance and Minister of Industry. Sporting careerAlbert played football from a young age with local club Valur. In 1944 he made his way to Scotland to study business at Skerry's College, Glasgow. He began his foreign footballing career with Rangers.[3] After a short stint there he went to England where he played for Arsenal as an amateur; he played several friendly matches and two First Division matches in October 1946. He was only Arsenal's second foreign player.[4] Political careerIn 1974, he was elected to the Alþingi (the Icelandic parliament), representing Reykjavík. He ran for president in 1980 election but only finished third and lost to Vigdís Finnbogadóttir.[5] In 1983, he became Minister of Finance. In 1985, he was appointed Minister of Industry, a position he held until 1987, when a tax scandal forced his resignation.[6] Feeling that the Independence Party's leadership had failed to support him, he left the party soon after his resignation and only a few weeks before a general election.[7] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-557608/On-This-Day--April-7.html |title=On This Day - April 7 | Daily Mail Online |website=Dailymail.co.uk |date= |accessdate=2016-06-30}} 2. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.arsenal.com/history/profiles/279/albert-gudmundsson |title=Albert Gudmundsson |website=Arsenal.com |date= |accessdate=2016-06-30 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305013838/http://www.arsenal.com/history/profiles/279/albert-gudmundsson |archivedate=5 March 2016 |df=dmy-all }} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/association=isl/news/newsid=1457874.html |title=Iceland honours football pioneer Gudmundsson |website=UEFA.com |date=2010-03-04 |accessdate=2016-06-30}} 4. ^Fottballers who became Politicians 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.fifa.com/news/y=2013/m=11/news=leaving-football-behind-2231080.html |title=Leaving football behind |website=FIFA.com |date=2016-06-10 |accessdate=2016-06-30}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://timarit.is/titlebrowse.jsp?issueID%3D427127%26pageSelected%3D59%26lang%3D0 |title=Archived copy |accessdate=1 May 2007 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20070927200813/http://timarit.is/titlebrowse.jsp?issueID=427127&pageSelected=59&lang=0 |archivedate=27 September 2007 }} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://timarit.is/titlebrowse.jsp?issueID%3D427131%26pageSelected%3D58%26lang%3D0 |title=Archived copy |accessdate=1 May 2007 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20070930154525/http://timarit.is/titlebrowse.jsp?issueID=427131&pageSelected=58&lang=0 |archivedate=30 September 2007 }} External links
