As with similar orchids, the flowering plants differ from those which are not flowering. The non-flowering plants have a rosette of leaves but the flowering plants lack a rosette and have a single flower with leaves on the flowering spike. This greenhood has a white flower with green and pale brownish-fawn stripes and a long, curved protruding labellum. It is found in inland areas between Kalbarri and Esperance. DescriptionPterostylis scabra is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and when not flowering, a rosette of leaves lying flat on the ground, each leaf {{convert|10-40|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2-3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Flowering plants have a single flower {{convert|30-40|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide borne on a flowering stem {{convert|60-180|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} high. The flowers are white with green and pale brownish-fawn stripes. The dorsal sepal and petals are fused, forming a hood or "galea" over the column, the dorsal sepal curving forward with a short pointed tip. The lateral sepals are erect with a small gap between them and the galea and have thread-like ends {{convert|30-35|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long. The labellum is long, narrow and down-curved, protruding prominently above the sinus between the lateral sepals. Flowering occurs from May to August.[2][3][4]Taxonomy and namingPterostylis scabra was first formally described in 1840 by John Lindley and the description was published in the A Sketch of the Vegetation of the Swan River Colony.[5][6] The specific epithet (scabra) is a Latin word meaning "rough", "scurfy" or "scabby",[7] referring to the rough surface of the labellum.[2]Distribution and habitatThe green-veined shell orchid is found in inland areas between Kalbarri and Esperance in the Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains, Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest and Mallee biogeographic regions.[2][3][8] ConservationPterostylis scabra is classified as "not threatened" by the Western Australian Government Department of Parks and Wildlife.[8] It usually grows in moist, shaded areas, often near temporary streams but also grows in woodland and on granite outcrops.[2][3]References1. ^{{WCSP | 170651 | Pterostylis scabra }} {{Taxonbar|from=Q15492993}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Andrew|last2=Dundas|first2=Pat|last3=Dixon|first3=Kingsley|last4=Hopper|first4=Stephen|title=Orchids of Western Australia|date=2008|publisher=University of Western Australia Press|location=Crawley, Western Australia|isbn=9780980296457|page=349}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Hoffman|first1=Noel|last2=Brown|first2=Andrew|title=Orchids of South-West Australia|date=2011|publisher=Noel Hoffman|location=Gooseberry Hill|isbn=9780646562322|page=401|edition=3rd}} 4. ^{{cite web|last1=Archer|first1=William|title=Pterostylis scabra|url=http://esperancewildflowers.blogspot.com.au/2011/07/pterostylis-scabra-shell-orchid.html|publisher=Esperance Wildflowers|accessdate=5 August 2017|date=2011-07-26}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|title=Pterostylis scabra|url=https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/488876|publisher=APNI|accessdate=5 August 2017}} 6. ^{{cite book|last1=Lindley|first1=John|title=A Sketch of the Vegetation of the Swan River Colony|date=1840|publisher=James Ridgway|location=London|page=liii|url=https://archive.org/details/sketchvegetatio00goog|accessdate=20 June 2017}} 7. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page =670}} 8. ^1 {{FloraBase|name=Pterostylis scabra|id=1697}} 4 : Pterostylis|Endemic orchids of Australia|Orchids of Western Australia|Plants described in 1840 |
