It was first described by Jean-Jacques Kieffer in 1906. The larvae tunnel in the shoots of bay willow (Salix pentandra) and may cause the shoots to swell slightly. DescriptionThe orange or red larvae live under the bark of shoots of bay willow (Salix pentandra). Before the larvae pupate they make emergence holes which may be the only indication of their presence.[2][3] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Rabdophaga nielseni Kieffer in Kieffer & Nielsen, 1906|url=https://species.nbnatlas.org/species/NBNSYS0100005022#names|website=NBN museum|accessdate=26 December 2017}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q13623277}}{{Bibionomorpha-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|last1=Ellis|first1=W N|title=Rabdophaga nielsenii Kieffer, 1906|url=http://bladmineerders.nl/parasites/animalia/arthropoda/insecta/diptera/nematocera/cecidomyiidae/cecidomyiinae/lasiopteridi/oligotrophini/rabdophaga/rabdophaga-nielsenii/|website=Plant Parasites of Europe|accessdate=26 December 2017}} 3. ^{{cite book |last1=Redfern |first1=Margaret |last2=Shirley |first2=Peter |last3=Boxham |first3=Michael |title=British Plant Galls |date=2011 |publisher=Field Study Council |location=Shrewsbury |isbn=978 185153 284 1|pages=282–299 |edition=Second}} 6 : Cecidomyiidae|Nematoceran flies of Europe|Gall-inducing insects|Insects described in 1906|Taxa named by Jean-Jacques Kieffer|Willow galls |
