Raja Som Shah or Raja Soham Shah was king of Ramnagar State. He created the Chauth System as protection fees. He claimed the Chauth (protection fees) from Portuguese of Daman. Portuguese captain Fernao De Miranda paid 1/8 share of total revenue of Daman. In 1670, Fernao De Miranda came in a agreement with Vikram Shah Mukne of Jawhar State to crush the Som Shah. So king of jawhar attacked at Ramnagar State and destroyed many of village in the territory of Ramnagar but Raja Som Shah was not able check Vikram Shah so vikram shah claimed the chauth from Portuguese. After that Fernao De Miranda sent a secret latter to Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhonsle to get ride from kings of Ramnagar State and Jawhar State. Shivaji agreed and checked the Som Shah. Shivaji came to know about Som Shah and his Chauth system and he liked it. After that shivaji demanded chauth from Portuguese and they did so. But after some time, Fernao De Miranda stopped the payment to shivaji. Shivaji sent his men to captain and asked about chauth but captain replied that you have not defeated king of ramnagar and jawhar so we will pay to them not for you. 5th June 1672, shivaji sent his army under his minister Peshwa Moropant Pingley and firstly he defeated the Vikram Shah of jawhar but he was succeeded by his son and then peshwa marched against Som Shah, seized the ramnagar and defeated him.
