Ranger José Suárez (born August 26, 1995) is a Venezuelan professional baseball pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball (MLB). Suárez signed with the Phillies as an international free agent in {{by|2012}}. He made his MLB debut in {{by|2018}}.

Baseball career

Minor leagues

Suárez signed with the Phillies as an international free agent in April 2012. He made his Minor League Baseball (MiLB) debut that year with the DSL Phillies, pitching five scoreless innings over three games.[1] Suárez returned to that team in {{by|2013}}, posting a 3.18 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 17 innings.[1] In {{by|2014}}, he once again returned to the team, posting a 5–4 record and 1.56 ERA in 14 games with 78 strikeouts (leading the league) and one walk in 80.2 innings.[1][2]

In {{by|2015}}, Suárez pitched for the Rookie GCL Phillies, compiling a 3–0 record and 0.65 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 27{{fraction|2|3}} innings.[1] He was named Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July, and Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week on July 26.[2]

Suárez spent {{by|2016}} with the Class A Short-Season Williamsport Crosscutters for whom he was 6–4 with a 2.81 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 53 strikeouts in 73.2 innings in 13 starts.[1] He was named a July 31 New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week and Phillies Pitcher of the Week, and a mid-season New York-Penn League All Star.[1][2]

The {{by|2017}} season found Suárez pitching for both the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws and the Class A-Advanced Clearwater Threshers, combing for a record of 8–6 and 2.27 ERA with 128 strikeouts in 122.2 innings in 22 games started.[3] Suárez was named a July 2 South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week, and an August 6 Florida State League Pitcher of the Week.[1][2] He was also named Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April.[2] The Phillies added Suárez to their 40-man roster after the {{by|2017}} season.[4]

He began 2018 with the Double-A Reading Fighting Phils, before advancing to the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Between the two teams, he was 6–3 with a 2.75 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 124.1 innings in 21 games started.[1] He was named an April 22 and June 24 Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, and Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week three times.[1][2][5]

Major leagues

Suárez received his big league call up and made his MLB debut on July 26, 2018, against the Cincinnati Reds.[6] He entered the game as a batter in the top of the first inning, before having thrown a pitch. His 2018 Phillies season statistics include a 1-1 win-loss record, with a 5.40 ERA, 11 strikeouts, and 15 innings pitched.[7]
