BackgroundSmith was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He is of Māori and Indigenous Australian descent.[2] Smith is the son of former New Zealand international Tyran Smith,[3] and the nephew of boxer and former professional rugby league footballer Anthony Mundine.[2] He played his junior rugby league for the Mascot Jets, before being signed by the Parramatta Eels.
