He excelled at tennis while at Harvard and played tennis at the Crescent Athletic Club.[2] Carleton lost his first match at the U.S. Championships in 1896 to Edwin Fischer. In 1898 he lost in round two to Harold Hackett. Carleton reached the semi-finals of the U.S. Championships in 1903, and in beating Mal Whitman's younger brother was "steady and sure in the placing of his strokes."[3] Carleton lost his semi-final to Laurence Doherty.[4] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.tennisarchives.com/player.php?playerid=6078|title=Richard Hugh Carleton|publisher=Tennis Archives|website=www.tennisarchives.com}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Carleton, Richard}}{{US-tennis-bio-stub}}2. ^{{cite web |url=https://bklyn.newspapers.com/image/83185689/ |date=29 Aug 1903| page=20| title=The Semi-Finals| work=Brooklyn Life (bklyn.newspapers.com)| access-date=September 25, 2017}} 3. ^{{cite web |title=Tennis Champions Meet: National Tournament at Newport Carried Into Fifth Round. |url=https://www.nytimes.com/1903/08/21/archives/tennis-champions-meet-national-tournament-at-newport-carried-into.html |work=The New York Times| date=August 21, 1903| access-date=September 25, 2017}} 4. ^{{cite web |title=U.S. Open 1903 |url=http://www.tennis.co.nf/U.S.%20OPEN%201903.htm |website=www.tennis.co.nf}} 6 : 1875 births|19th-century male tennis players|1939 deaths|American male tennis players|Harvard Crimson men's tennis players|Tennis people from Illinois |
