Richard Carlyon (1930–2006)[1] was an American artist living in Richmond, Virginia and teaching at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of the Arts,[2] where he became a professor emeritus.

He was given posthumous retrospective exhibitions at Anderson Gallery,[3] at VCU,[4][5][6] Reynolds Gallery,[7][8] Visual Arts Center of Richmond,[9] and 1708 Gallery.[10] Among the awards and honors he received in addition to the 1993 "Distinguished Teaching of Art Award" from The College Art Association of America, were two professional fellowships from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the 28th Annual Theresa Pollak multi-media prize by Richmond Magazine,[11] and in 2005 the VCU Presidential Medal of Honor.[12]

Awards and grants

Richard Carlyon while at Virginia Commonwealth University gained national recognition for his teaching and was awarded the College Art Association of America's Award of Distinction in 1993.[13] Members of the Selection Committee were: Murray DePillars, Virginia Commonwealth University, chair; Joan Backes, Kansas City Art Institute; Carolyn Manosevitz, Austin Community College; and Idelle Weber, Harvard University.[14]

Exhibitions

Carlyon's art is represented in the Jack Blanton Collection at Longwood Center for the Visual Arts.[15]

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts includes in its collection “A Screwing,” 1995, by Richard Carlyon. This work is made of wood, hinges and screws, is approximately 4-1/2 by 8 feet in size, and was a gift of Jean and Robert Hobbs of Richmond, Virginia.[16] In 2010 his art was shown at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.[17]

Richard Carlyon was one of the artists whose book art was displayed in the exhibition BookArt@Artspace curated by Michael Pierce at Artspace in Richmond, Virginia.[18] His art has been shown solo and in group exhibitions both regionally and nationally, including venues such as 1708 Gallery in Richmond, The Anderson Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University, The Studio Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Nexus Gallery in Philadelphia. In New York City, his art has been exhibited at the Fleischmann Gallery, the March Gallery, and the Siegel Gallery.[19]

Art and cultural activities in Virginia

Edwin Slipek wrote in his article "The Long Goodbye" that "The Richmond artist and longtime charismatic Virginia Commonwealth University professor was prolific and always contemporary for almost half a century as his work blurred differences between painting, sculpture, collage, filmmaking, performance, photography, printmaking, conceptualism and dance."[20] Ashley Kistler, curator and organizer of the Anderson Gallery portion of the posthumous Carlyon retrospective in which his studio was re-constructed piece-by-piece, stated that she had noted personal details in the show such as ink-on-parchment plottings of Martha Graham's choreography. She said, “I am interested in how dance infiltrated everything he did.” In other rooms throughout the Anderson Gallery, drawings, paintings and prints were hung chronologically, starting with his earliest collages to later works.[21]

Carlyon's art is shown on the walls of a Georgian home in Virginia in the magazine Veranda. The walls of the home also exhibit architectural fragments and paintings by Hans Hoffmann and Robert de Niro.[22]

He participated in a VisArts RVA Open House lineup[23] and in a Center for Communications Studies & Theatre at Longwood University.[24]

Biography

A YouTube video of Carlyon with his wife (the artist Eleanor Rufty), and gallery owner Beverly Reynolds shows him receiving the VCU Presidential Medal.[25] Eleanor Rufty, who taught at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School, is the widow of Carlyon. Together with her late husband, she "influenced a generation of artists studying in Virginia."[26]

Blackbird, an online journal of literature and the arts, posted multiple interviews with Carlyon.[27][28] In 2002, Blackbird editor Mary Flinn chatted with Carlyon in the Blackbird editorial office at Virginia Commonwealth University. They discussed the origin of Flight Song and the influence of John Cage. Their discussion ranged from "the use of video in art, to the state of art as we move into the twenty-first century." Again in 2006,[29] Mary Flinn of Blackbird visited with Richard Carlyon "to discuss his retrospective show at the Reynolds Gallery in Richmond, Virginia." In the interview, they discussed "the importance of placement of the paintings and drawings in the gallery space, the relationship of dance and painting, and other issues surrounding Carlyon's work and process."[30]

Reviewer Edwin Slipek in his STYLE theatre article, "The Long Goodbye", used the subtitle "The late Richard Carlyon set the bar for artistic exploration, integrity and influence".[31]

In January and February 2018 both Reynolds Gallery[32][33][34] and the Virginia Commonwealth University Cabell Library[35] honored Richard Carlyon with retrospective exhibitions and viewings of projected images of his films, introducing newer viewers to his work and life. At Reynolds Gallery a panel discussion on the Richard Carlyon exhibition A Network of Possibilities was moderated by curator Ashley Kistler and featured Paul Ryan, artist and art critic, Howard Risatti, art historian, and Scott Nolley, art conservator.
