Riviera delle Palme is a tourist denomination that identifies that stretch of the Marche coast that goes from Cupra Marittima to the Tronto river, passing through Grottammare and San Benedetto del Tronto, it is the most important tourist reality of the Marche region for number of receptive structures and presence , characterized by the presence of thousands of palms, mainly of the species Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia and P. sylvestris.

Originally the wording was attributed only to San Benedetto del Tronto, in which, between public and private gardens and along the city avenues, there are a total of about 8,000 palm trees of various species, which have long been a sort of city symbol. The name "Riviera delle Palme" was taken over by a tourist consortium established in 2000 which, in addition to the aforementioned coastal municipalities, also includes municipalities in the immediate hinterland.

Tourist Consortium

Established in the year 2000, the "Riviera delle Palme" tourist consortium was born as an information, promotion and development organ of the territory at international level. Initially established only for San Benedetto del Tronto and, subsequently for the nearby seaside resorts of Grottammare and Cupra Marittima, it was decided to enrich the bathing offer by promoting important cultural events, highlighting, alongside the Adriatic Sea, also the riches of the hinterland sambenedettese and Piceno, with the entry into the consortium of the municipalities of Offida, Monteprandone, Acquaviva Picena, Ripatransone, and, recently, also from the Lazio municipality of Accumoli (in Province of Rieti)[1].Although not nominally present in the tourist consortium, Martinsicuro is often considered part of the Riviera delle Palme.[2].

Main locations

San Benedetto del Tronto

It is the southernmost coastal municipality of Marche. Also called Riviera delle Palme , which is also extended to the neighboring towns on the coast, it attracts visitors from all over Italy and Europe; it is one of the main tourist resorts of the Marche and the middle slopes Adriatic Sea. The city has an ancient nucleus (the "high town") not far from the sea, at the foot of which develops the "marina", the fishing village developed since the eighteenth century. The ancient village is characterized by the fourteenth-century hexagonal Torre dei Gualtieri ; the "tower", which marks the hours of the day through its clock, is the symbol of the city.[3]

San Benedetto has always been proud of the Blue Flag beach banner, an indication of the healthiness of bathing water as well as of the attention placed on the overall environmental quality of the city, from the protection of drinking water to careful management of separate collection .[4]

San Benedetto also boasts the Green Flag , a recognition that is awarded to coastal towns that are suitable for children. The ranking is drawn up by a sample of Italian pediatricians.[5]

Equipped with a marina, with about 621 berths, a fishing port and a wholesale fish market among the most important in Italy, San Benedetto has always been closely linked to the sea and the tradition of the navy.

The Maritime Museum includes the Museum of the maritime civilization of the Marche , the Museo delle Anfore , the Museo Ittico and the Antiquarium Truentinum . The Pinacoteca del Mare - inaugurated in April 2009 - although located in the heart of the old prisoner, is an integral part of the thematic museum center dedicated to the sea that the Municipal Administration set up at the Fish Market.[6]

Along the southern pier of San Benedetto del Tronto the MAM, "Museum of Art on the Sea", a permanent open-air museum, which develops and hosts 145 works of art, of which 135 are sculptures and 10 are large murals.[7]

The pride of the city is the lungomare, for the portal virgilio.it that of San Benedetto is one of the most beautiful promenades in Italy.[8] It was designed by the engineer Luigi Onorati in 1931 and the next year was inaugurated; was considered a disproportionate achievement for the time.

Over the years, the project extended to the current size of about 6 km, from the Giorgini roundabout to the Salvo D'Acquisto roundabout in Porto d'Ascoli.

The redeveloped section of the southern promenade includes ten theme gardens: the multisensory garden, the country garden, the garden of Children, Health, Citrus, Mediterranean, Palms, Arid, Humid, Roses. Each of the ten gardens has original features: plays of water, ponds, benches and armchairs for relaxing, games for children, particular tree species and a Cycle Path, designed by the architect Farnush Davarpanah , made with precious materials.

In 2016 work began on the redevelopment of the northern promenade, which extends for about 2 km from the "Palazzo Las Vegas" to Albula stream.[9]

The accommodation consistency is remarkable: San Benedetto del Tronto boasts over 300 establishments including hotels, residences and B&B; 150 Seaside resort and 42 free beaches along the Sambenedetto coast must be added.[10]

Grottammare

Grottammare is one of the renowned tourist resorts of the region Marche, awarded several times by the Touring Club Italiano with the Blue Flag beach.[11]

The flagship of the city are its long coastline, about five kilometers, where there are numerous equipped Seaside resort and the "High Country" which has received important awards like the one between I Borghi più belli d'Italia.[12]

The seafront of Grottammare has recently undergone restyling work with the modernization of the pedestrian area and the addition of a walk with a cycle path that connects the coast of Grottammare to that of Cupra Marittima.[13]

The accommodation consistency, between hotels and apartments is remarkable: Grottammare boasts about 100 establishments including hotels, residences, Bed and breakfast and Camping.[14]

Cupra Marittima

Awarded several times by the Touring Club Italiano with the award Blue Flag beach, Cupra Marittima belongs to the district of the Riviera delle Palme of the lower Marche coast.[15] Behind the marina (the country proper ) there are three hills: Sant'Andrea with the recently renovated fortress of the same name, Marano with its medieval town hall, which is the main town of the town, and Boccabianca.[16]

The beach of Cupra Marittima is sandy and over 2 kilometers long, in which there are several Seaside resort. A long bike path crosses the seafront and continues until Grottammare.[17]

The pride of the town is the Piceno Malacological Museum, one of the most important shell museums in the world, thanks to over 900,000 exhibits and interesting testimonies of primitive malacological art.[18] In the relevant Archaeological site of Cupra Marittima, located north of the town, the urban layout of the Roman city can be recognized.[19]
