Ramon Martin Chavez (born c. 1964) is an American investment banker and entrepreneur. He is the co-founder of Quorum Software Systems and Kiodex. He was the chief information officer at Goldman Sachs from 2014 to 2017. He has served as its chief financial officer since May 2017.

Early life

R. Martin Chavez was born circa 1964.[1] He is a 10th generation Mexican on his paternal side.[2][3] His maternal grandparents were immigrants from Mexico and Spain.[1] His mother is a court stenographer.[1] He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his four siblings.[1][3]

Chavez was educated at the Albuquerque Academy, graduating in 1981.[2][3] He entered Harvard University as a sophomore, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a master's degree in computer science in 1985.[2][3][4] He went on to earn a PhD in medical information sciences from Stanford University.[1][4]

Career

Chavez started his career in the Silicon Valley.[1][3] He co-founded Quorum Software Systems in 1989.[5] He served as its chief technology officer from 1989 to 1993, when he left the company.[5]

Chavez joined the J. Aron Currency and Commodities Division of Goldman Sachs in 1993,[1] where he was senior energy strat until 1997.[5][3] He then joined Credit Suisse Financial Products, where he was the Global Head of Energy Derivatives from 1997 to 2000.[5] He co-founded Kiodex in 2000, and he served as its chief executive officer and chairman until 2004.[5]

Chavez re-joined Goldman Sachs in 2005 as Managing Director in IBD Strats. He was later promoted to Global Co-Head of Securities Division Strats, followed by Global Co-Chief Operating Officer of the Equities Franchise.[5][4] He served as its chief information officer from 2014 to 2017, when he was succeeded by Elisha Wiesel.[3][6] He served as its deputy chief financial officer until May 2017, when he succeeded Harvey Schwartz as its chief financial officer.[5][7] He is a member of Goldman Sachs' Hispanic/Latino Network and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Network.[3][5]

Chavez served on the board of directors of PNM Resources from 2001 to 2005.[6] He serves on the board of overseers of his alma mater, Harvard University.[8] He is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.[5]

Personal life

Chavez has two dogs and a large family of brothers and sisters. He grew up in Albuquerque, NM. He is passionate about music and enjoys art. He has Japanese tattoos on his arms.
