He was then admitted at Lincoln's Inn in 1826, and called to the Irish Bar in 1833, when he was also then admitted at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1834, he was called to the English Bar.[4] Tennent married Eliza, daughter of John McCracken in 1830, and they had at least one child: Robert Tennent, born in 1854.[4] Tennent was elected as a Whig Member of Parliament (MP) for Belfast at the 1847 general election and held the seat until 1852, when he was defeated.[5] References1. ^{{cite web |last1=Rayment |first1=Leigh |title=The House of Commons: Constituencies beginning with "B" |url=http://www.leighrayment.com/commons/Bcommons2.htm |website=Leigh Rayment's Peerage Page |accessdate=15 September 2018 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20180915170511/http://www.leighrayment.com/commons/Bcommons2.htm|archivedate=15 September 2018 |date=13 September 2018 |dead-url=no}} 2. ^{{cite news |title=Irish Members Returned |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000897/18470814/018/0003 |accessdate=15 September 2018 |work=Tipperary Vindicator |date=14 August 1847 |page=3 |via = British Newspaper Archive|subscription=yes}} 3. ^{{cite news |title=The Irish Members |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001424/18470814/025/0004 |accessdate=15 September 2018 |work=Dublin Weekly Nation |date=14 August 1847 |page=4 |via = British Newspaper Archive|subscription=yes}} 4. ^1 {{cite web |title=Robert James TENNENT |url=http://venn.lib.cam.ac.uk/cgi-bin/search-2017c.pl?sur=&suro=w&fir=&firo=c&cit=&cito=c&c=all&z=all&tex=TNNT834RJ&sye=&eye=&col=all&maxcount=5 |website=A Cambridge Alumni Database |accessdate=15 September 2018}} 5. ^{{cite book|editor1-last=Walker|editor1-first=B.M.|title=Parliamentary Election Results in Ireland, 1801-1922|date=1978|publisher=Royal Irish Academy|location=Dublin|isbn=0901714127|page=253–254}} External links
