Career

Zwanziger was a founder of Medisense Inc.,^[3] a maker of glucose meters, in 1981, and served as CEO until 1991.^[4] Medisense was later acquired by Abbott Laboratories in 1996 for $876 million.^[5]

Zwanziger was a founder of Alere Inc. (then called Selfcare Inc.),^[6]^[2] a maker of diagnostic testing devices, in 1991.^[4] He served as CEO until 2014.^[7]^[8]^[9] Its diabetes unit was sold to Johnson and Johnson in 2001 for $1.3 billion.^[10]^[6] Alere acquired San Diego-based Biosite Inc. in a $1.7 billion hostile takeover in 2007.^[11] Abbott acquired Alere in 2017 for $5.3 billion.^[12]^[6]
