BiographyBorn on 30 June 1880 in Zürich, Rosa Bloch was the daughter of the grain merchant Berthold Bloch and Julie Guggenheim. Brought up in a family of poor merchants, once she gained her independence, she worked as a representative of a jewellery shop. Initially an anarchist, she joined the socialist party in 1912 but later became a marxist. She proved to be a competent editor of the women workers' journal Die Vorkämperin, contributing articles which not only were politically engaging but were remarkably well drafted.[1] She married Siegfried Bollag, director of the Swiss Social Archives.[1] Highly intelligent and a talented orator, in early 1918 she joined the left wing of the Olten Action Committee and became actively involved in the women's socialist movement. That June, she organized an effective women's demonstration against rising food prices, presenting her claims to the Cantonal Council.[1] Also in 1918, she became the first president of the Socialist Party's Women's Committee.[1][3] In 1921, after the Socialist Party had broken up, together with the other left-wingers she became a founding member of the Communist Party.[1] Rosa Bloch-Bollag died on 13 July 1922 in Zürich after undergoing a goitre operation.[2] She is remembered as one of the most effective women in the Swiss workers' movement.[1] References1. ^1 2 3 4 5 6 {{cite web|url=http://www.hls-dhs-dss.ch/textes/d/D9274.php|title=Bloch [-Bollag], Rosa|publisher=Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz|date=8 December 2017|accessdate=19 November 2018 |language=German}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Bloch-Bollag, Rosa}}2. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://www.gauchebdo.ch/2018/11/16/rosa-bloch-militante-a-facettes-multiples/|title=Rosa Bloch, militante à facettes multiples|author=Spillmann, Anna|publisher=Gauchebdo|date=16 November 2018|accessdate=19 November 2018 |language=French}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://pc-ge.org/le-parti/heros-et-heroines-du-mouvement-communiste-suisse-du-20eme-siecle|title=Héros et héroïnes du mouvement communiste suisse du 20ème siècle |author=Rauber, André|publisher=Parti Communiste Genevois|date=3 April 2015|accessdate=19 November 2018 |language=French}} 7 : 1880 births|1922 deaths|People from Zürich|Swiss feminists|Swiss marxists|Swiss women's rights activists|Social Democratic Party of Switzerland politicians |
