Dr Roscoe Conkling Giles (1890–1970) was the first African American to earn a degree from Cornell Medical School.{{sfn|Oshinsky|2016|p=195}} He worked as a surgeon at Provident Hospital, and served as the hospital's Chairman of the Division of General Surgery.
