{{short description|Polish composer}}Rosebery d'Arguto (born Martin Rozenberg on December 24, 1890 – 1943) was a Polish composer and conductor. He was killed during the Holocaust in 1943.[1]

Early life

Martin Rozenberg was born in 1890 in Szreńsk, Poland. His father was a landowner. Growing up in Soviet Poland, he developed an interest in Politics, joining the Polish independence movement in Warsaw in 1905. He was persecuted by Russian police, but fled to Austria, he stayed in Vienna before travelling to Italy where he studied music.[2]

In the early 1920s he travelled to Germany and joined the Workers music movement. During the 1930s the Nazi party banned his music. He left Germany sometime before the Invasion of Poland, however when returning to Berlin to run errands on September 13, 1939 he was arrested and deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.[3]

Internment

In Sachsenhausen he attempted to carry on his musical exploits, forming Jewish choir groups. However, when Adolf Hitler ordered the full deportation of Jewish prisoners in Germany, he was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was killed in 1943.[4]

Legacy

Following his extermination, many documents and records related to d'Arguto's music were destroyed due to National Socialist policies. A number of songs were given orally to fellow prisoner at Sachsenhausen Aleksander Kulisiewicz, who went onto preserve them.[5]

Documents related to his work are now held at the Academy of Arts, Berlin.
