}}Russell Vitale (born September 26, 1992) is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer.[2][3] He is known for his singles "What They Want" and "Losin Control", which peaked respectively at number 83 and 63 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[4]

Outside of his solo music, he is part of the Diemon Crew, a rap group.[4][5][6] His twelfth studio album, There's Really a Wolf, was released on May 5, 2017, and was certified Platinum on April 18, 2018.[8]

Early life

Russ was born on September 26, 1992 in Secaucus, New Jersey. He is of Sicilian descent.[1] He has also lived in North Carolina and Kentucky, due to his father having to constantly relocate due to his career, before his family found a permanent home in Georgia.[7] He started writing raps in his notebook at seven years old and started making beats when he was 14.[8] He recorded his first song at 18 years old.[12][9]

Career

From December 2011 to August 2014, Russ released 11 albums and 87 singles consecutively; all free of charge through Soundcloud.[1]

In 2016, Russ partnered with Columbia Records.[10] He later released the single "What They Want", which peaked at number 83 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[11]

[12] He then released another single "Losin Control", which peaked at number 62 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and is currently his highest charting single.[4]

On May 5, 2017, Russ released his first Columbia studio album There's Really a Wolf which debuted at number seven on the US Billboard 200 and number four on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.[13][14][15] On April 18, 2018, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for combined sales and album-equivalent units of over 1,000,000 units in the United States.[16] Prior to releasing his album, Russ announced on his Twitter account that he would be headlining his own tour, The Wake Up Tour, from May 16 to August 5, 2017.[17]

Musical style

His early inspirations were G-Unit, 50 Cent and Eminem.[18][19]{{cbignore}}

He produced beats for around 6 years before he attempted to record himself rapping.[20]

Russ is known for his songs being produced, mixed, mastered, engineered, written, and performed by himself.[21] Most of his songs contain hip hop and R&B elements, while combining rapping and singing on the hook.

His style has been described by Uproxx as a "raspy, hardbody rap flow, and lilting, almost drunken singing voice".[22]

Personal life

Russ has two different eye colors, a condition known as heterochromia; his left eye is dark-brown and his right is light-brown.[18]

Controversies

In September 2017, Russ posted a picture of him wearing a T-shirt advocating an anti-drug stance on Twitter. The shirt, reading "How much Xans and Lean do you have to do before you realize you're a fucking loser",[23][24] was panned and became a meme critiquing Russ.[25]

Russ performed at Splash! Festival in Germany in July 2018. According to a Breakfast Club interview in September 2018, Russ and his entourage attacked a rapper who had been insulting Russ on social media.[26] The following day, a video was leaked showing Russ' entourage attacking rapper Smokepurpp.[27] Russ said that attack was due to Smokepurpp's constant attempts at a feud with him through saying "Fuck Russ" on Twitter and Smokepurpp posting images of Russ' sister.[28][28]

Several days following the video leak showing the attack, Adam Grandmaison, better known as Adam22, a well-known figure in the hip-hop community for his No Jumper podcast, spoke out on Twitter saying that Russ' friends attacked him.[29]
