In 2008, she received the Cloëtta Prize. LifeSabine Werner studied at University of Tubingen and University of Munich, where she received her doctorate in 1989 with Peter Hans Hofschneider, with a dissertation on the molecular pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma. She was awarded the Otto Hahn Medal for her achievements in her doctoral studies. As a post-doctoral student, from 1990 to 1992, she studied at the University of California in San Francisco. In 1993, she was Hermann and Lilly Schilling professor at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry. In 1995, she published with a paper on the function of fibroblast growth factors in the skin. She worked until 1999, in Martinsried, and then she started her full professorship in Zurich.[1] Her work focuses on the role of growth factors in wound healing and cancer. In 1997 she was one of the co-founders of the biotech startup Switch Biotech AG, which went bankrupt in September 2004, alongside Horst Domdey. Since 2011, she has been a member of the Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.[2] In 2012 she was elected a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization. She is also a member of the jury of the Hofrichter-Recherchepreises of the Zurich Foundation Experimental Biomedicine.
