The “Women’s Column of Strength” is a privately funded statue that was placed in 2017 after being approved by the Board of Supervisors. The memorial is controversial as the sculpture honors the comfort women who were women and girls forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army in occupied territories before and during World War II. The mayor of Osaka, Japan stated he would sever the sister-city relationship with San Francisco as "the relationship of trust has completely been destroyed".[3] A gingko biloba tree planted in March 2017 honors Chinatown activist Rose Pak.[4] St. Mary's Square includes the former location of the Kong Chow Temple.[4] References1. ^{{Cite GNIS|1655535|Saint Marys Square|access-date=November 25, 2017}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.sfparksalliance.org/our-parks/parks/saint-marys-square|title=Saint Mary's Square|access-date=10 May 2012|publisher=San Francisco Parks Alliance}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=http://m.sfgate.com/politics/article/Japanese-mayor-says-he-ll-end-SF-sister-city-12381792.php|title=Japanese mayor says he’ll end SF sister city status over comfort women statue|work=SF Gate|first=Evan |last=Sernoffsky |date=November 25, 2017|access-date=26 November 2017}} 4. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://www.sfexaminer.com/sf-plant-ginkgo-biloba-tree-honor-rose-pak-st-marys-park/|title=SF to plant ginkgo biloba tree in honor of Rose Pak in St. Mary’s Park|last=Rodriguez|first=Joe Fitzgerald|date=2017-03-15|website=The San Francisco Examiner|language=en-US|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2019-01-10}} External links
