Founded in New York in 1922, it is headquartered in Van Nuys, California, with additional branches in Miami, New York, Germany, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. HistoryAlfred Music's history began in New York City's Tin Pan Alley in 1922, when Sam Manus, a violinist and importer of mood music for silent films, started a music publishing company and named it Manus Music. The company published primarily popular sheet music. In 1930, Sam acquired the music publisher, Alfred & Company, founded by Alfred Haase. Sam decided to combine the names and shortened it to Alfred Music, which the company is still known as today. Sam's son, Morty (né Morton Manus; 1926–2016), clarinetist and pianist, began working for Alfred Music in the late 1940s and met his wife Iris at the company when the bookkeeper, Rose Kopelman, brought her daughter to work one day. Inspired by the need for quality music educational products.[1] Morty, a clarinetist and pianist, oversaw the development of an instructional series for accordion, followed by books for guitar, piano, and recorder. Alfred Music was now more than just a sheet music publisher; the company was taking its first steps to becoming the leader in music education. In 1975, the firm moved to larger offices in Los Angeles. In 1980, with growing sales, the company went international. In 2002, the company partnered with Daisy Rock Girl Guitars, and in 2005 it acquired Warner Bros. Publications (including the Warner Bros. subsidiary company Belwin-Mills) from the Warner Music Group,[2] again expanding its business.[1][4] April 20, 2016, Alfred Music joins Peaksware, parent company of MakeMusic. Gear Fisher takes over as CEO and Ron Manus moves from CEO to Business Development Manager.[1][4] As of 2016, Alfred Music is also paired with MakeMusic, which is part of Peaksware Holdings, LLC portfolio of companies, to transform how music is composed, published, taught, learned, and performed by bringing together the leaders in educational music publishing and music technology.[1] Sound InnovationsThe Sound Innovations authors bring years of extensive teaching, conducting, and composing experience. Sound Innovations for String OrchestraSound Development emphasizes playing with a characteristic beautiful sound. The components of producing this sound are broken into four levels, consistent with the revolutionary Sound Innovations structure: Sound Tone, Sound Bowings, Sound Shifting, and Sound Scales, Arpeggios, Chorales, and Rhythms. The flexible levels can be used in the order that is best for your students, as individual warm-ups or as structured units. Your students will learn the proper use of the bow with the variables of tone, the next group of bowings needed for intermediate repertoire, and how to shift and play with vibrato. These skills are reinforced with comprehensive scales, arpeggios, sight-reading materials, rhythm exercises, and warm-up chorales. Ensemble Development for Concert BandGoing well beyond band method books, Ensemble Development for Young Concert Band provides exercises needed to help students develop virtually every concept needed to build the foundational qualities of exceptional concert band performance. Great care has been taken to ensure that this book will allow for differentiation of students at various beginning band levels. The perfect resource for helping your students grow in their understanding and abilities as ensemble musicians. Whether your students are progressing through exercises to better their technical facility, or challenging their musicianship with beautiful chorales, this book can be used after any band method or as a supplement to performance music. Building upon the concepts in Ensemble Development for Intermediate Concert Band, Ensemble Development for Advanced Concert Band features all new exercises and chorales, more technically and musically challenging material, and additional chorale composers. Sound PercussionThis resource consists of four books plus a Teacher's Score: Snare Drum / Bass Drum • Mallet Percussion • Timpani • Accessory Instruments. Each book can be used independently to focus on a particular instrument or in any combination as a full percussion ensemble. Lessons are presented in a fun and interesting way so that all members of the percussion section are engaged. OrganizationSound Percussion contains six sections covering everything from setting up the instruments to percussion ensemble performance. Sections include: Sound Rhythm • Sound Meter • Sound Rudiments • Sound Rolls • Sound Effects • Sound Performance. Directors can work through the book(s) progressively, or jump from section-to-section in order to address the specific educational needs of their students. The mallet book, however is more sequential by nature of note introduction. Skill Introduction and ReinforcementThe progression of rhythms, skills and note introduction, as well as the pacing of each, has been carefully considered to promote true comprehension and development. Skills are introduced with a backward-by-design approach. Learning goals are first identified, and then exercises are logically designed with obtainable steps that lead you toward achieving that goal. This is particularly helpful for mallet note recognition and snare drum rolls. Sound Concepts introduce the concept/skill in unison (when appropriate.) Sound Reinforcement exercises follow with the addition of dynamics and accents still in unison. Then Sound Combinations focus on performance skills with more independent parts. Each skill or concept is systematically introduced and exercises are designed to reinforce and lead students to be able to accurately perform with confidence and excitement. Mallet Note IntroductionMallet note reading and performance are approached in a unique and revolutionary way that won't overwhelm students with too much, too soon. Students will be introduced to 2–3 notes at a time using interesting rhythm patterns that will excite students and build their confidence. Students will genuinely learn to read their music and perform on mallet instruments feeling confident. Premier Piano CourseLesson BooksThe Lesson Book, the core of the course, introduces all new concepts. Beautifully presented and intelligently paced, it combines unusually attractive music and lyrics. The book features note reading, rhythm reading, sight-reading, and technical workouts. Included with each Lesson Book is a CD recording of the music performed on acoustic piano by Scott Price. To enhance and encourage practice, the music on the CD was recorded at a performance tempo and a slower practice tempo. When the Lesson, Theory, Performance, and Technique books are used together, they offer a fully integrated and unparalleled comprehensive approach to piano instruction. Theory BooksThe Theory Book is correlated page-by-page with the Lesson Book. Each new musical concept is reinforced through fun-filled writing, listening, and playing exercises. With games and puzzles added to compositional and creative activities, students retain concepts more easily and learn more thoroughly. In addition to written theory, unique features of the book include:
Performance BooksThe Performance Book contains appealing repertoire with charming lyrics to reinforce and enhance the learning of new musical concepts introduced in the Lesson Book. Attractive music, written by Dennis Alexander and Martha Mier, represents a variety of styles, plus performance tips on how to play each piece more musically. Like the Lesson Book, the CD included with the book contains all of the music performed at a performance tempo and a slowerpractice tempo. Performance skills are enhanced through Premier Performer suggestions. Students will enjoy performing these pieces for family and friends in a formal recital or on special occasions. Technique BooksThe Technique Book provides the technical tools needed to achieve artistic performances. Students will encounter skills in four areas—playing naturally (physical aspects), moving freely around the keyboard, playing beautifully (tone production), and playing artistically. The technical goals are accomplished through three types of activities—patterned exercises with necessary repetition to make the technique feel natural, artistic etudes that showcase the student's technique in a musical setting, and appealing and descriptive exercises called Technique Tools. The nine Technique Tools in Level 1A relate to relaxed shoulders, arm weight, moving freely, strong fingertips, finger weights, repeated notes, thumb position, finger independence, and gentle hand rock. Each page in the Technique Book correlates with a specific page in the Lesson Book. Supplementary BooksA combination of repertoire collections and activity books, the supplementary books that accompany Premier Piano Course provide additional reinforcement of concepts, arrangements of popular songs and movie themes, and graded standard repertoire, and contribute greatly to the student's success. These collections are each correlated page-by-page with the core Lesson Books. Some of the available books include Sight-Reading, Notespeller, Pop & Movie Hits, Jazz, Rags & Blues, and many others.
