It was named for William Salter, who arrived in South Australia on the Caroline in 1839, and had a sheep station in the area. The town was surveyed in 1858. The school opened in 1867 and closed in 1956.[1] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/manning/pn/s/s2.htm#salterS|title=Manning index of South Australia|publisher=State Library of South Australia|accessdate=4 October 2015}} {{District Council of Clare and Gilbert Valleys localities}}{{SouthAustralia-geo-stub}} 2 : Towns in South Australia|Mid North (South Australia) |
