Education and personal life

Roy identifies as a gay man and writes on this topic for the media.[2] He returned to India after 20 years living in San Francisco,[2] where he initially worked as a software engineer before turning to full-time writing.[1]

Career

Journalism

He is the Culture Editor of the news portal Firstpost.[3] He is also a contributing editor with the Huffington Post, a regular commentator for NPR's "Morning Edition" [4] and New America Media. He also has a weekly program on KALW 91.7FM, a public radio station in the San Francisco Bay Area.[5]

Literature

Roy is the author of the novel Don't Let Him Know. The story of secrets within two generations of an Indian family transplanted to the US, the action takes place between Kolkata, an American college town, and California.[4] The book was a 2016 longlist nominee for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature published in English.[6]

Roy has contributed stories to various anthologies including Storywallah!, Contours of the Heart, Because I Have a Voice: Queer Politics in India, Out! Stories from the New Queer India, New California Writing 2011 and The Phobic and the Erotic: The Politics of Sexualities in Contemporary India.[7]
