The Sapta Ratna Pagoda is a relatively new Chinese pagoda built just 25 years ago in Sorong, West Papua province, Indonesia. It was initially intended as a burial center for the ashes of all Buddhists who died but because of its location and architecture it has now also become a major tourist attraction. Located on top of a hill, the Sapta Ratna Pagoda stands as a majestic landmark in the city.

The best thing about this pagoda is the beautiful view of surrounding city from the top; and if you are lucky to be visiting in the evening, you will get a chance to see one of the best sunsets in Indonesia.

Each month about 7,000 locals and foreigners visit the pagoda.

Getting to the pagoda

The pagoda is located within the city and can be reached by public transport or taxi. Within a hundred yards from the main road, one can get the pagoda on foot. Just behind the pagoda is a temple and a statue of the Buddha.

The Sapta Ratna Pagoda was built about 25 years ago and has undergone minor restorations over the past few years. The pagoda has seven wooden stories with multiple eaves and built along the same original traditions as the stupa. The Sapta Ratna Pagoda still functions as a place of worship.

The best time to visit

Once you arrive in Sorong, you can visit the pagoda at any time but the best time is after 4 pm when the sun is less intense and you can walk around the gardens. The other reason to visit the pagoda in the evening is because you will get a chance to catch the beautiful panoramic sunset, which alone is worth a visit to this city.

It is worth checking the opening times of the pagoda before you go because it is not always open. Once inside you will be allowed to climb to the top floor from where you can catch breath-taking views of the surrounding city and the adjacent waterways.

The pagoda is best visited on a sunny day. If it rains the view is often not as good and you will miss the sunset.

Opening hours

The Sapta Ratna Pagoda is open everyday from 9 am till about 7 pm. There is a small admission fee of 80 US cents (1,000 rupiahs).
