Filipieva) (Russian: Школа № 49 (бывшая гимназия А. А. Филипьевой)) is educational institution in Rostov-on-Don. The building was built in the 1910s on the project of the engineer V. V. Popov (father) in the Art Nouveau style.[1] The gymnasium building has the status of an identified cultural heritage site.[2]

History

Female gymnasium of A.A. Filipieva was founded in the early XX century. In the 1910s, she moved to a new building on Gazetny Lane.[1] After the arrival of Soviet power, the gymnasium was transformed into the school of the first stage № 11. In the 1930s the school received № 49.

Architecture

The three-story school building has a P-shaped configuration in plan. The facades of the building are asymmetrical, they go outside Maxim Gorky and on Gazetny Lane. The architectural and artistic appearance of the facades is formed by the unscrewing and rounded angular volume. The facades are decorated with single and double pilasters of the Ionic order, combining the second and third floors, as well as interstore towers. The building has a modest stucco decoration in the form of wreaths. On the semi-circular corner of the building overlooking the intersection is the monogram of the Empress Maria Feodorovna. During construction a high-quality brick was used producing a metallic sound when tapping. A number of bricks are covered with glaze.[1]

Memorial plaques

In 2002, a memorial plaque with the text was installed on the facade of the building: "In this school a graduate of 1946, an outstanding ophthalmologist and statesman Academician Svyatoslav Nikolayevich Fedorov, studied." The memorial board was installed at the expense of the family of Fedorov.[3]

On October 4, 2012, a memorial plaque was erected on the school wall with the text: "In this school from 1946 to 1952 Yudovich Viktor Iosifovich studied, the outstanding scientist-mathematician in honor of whom is called the small planet".[4][5]
