It is part of the Teseney sub-zone and has a diverse population.[1] It is considered the last settlement in Eritrea before reaching the Sudanese Border[2] and is located in the lowlands.[3] Agriculture, livestock raising and trade are very important to the economy of the area. Aligider has access to potable water from both the Gash River and underground water resources.[1] Processes of irrigation have created an artificial marsh near the Gash River which provides a large habitat for many bird species.[4] Aligider was once an Italian frontier village.[6] Aligider was an agricultural area, growing cotton and other crops, and managed by the Societa Impresse Africana (SIA).[5] SIA helped develop Aligider into a company town, housing tenant farmers and other workers on the plantation.[5] A school and clinic were set up and by the 1950s, the plantation employed 2,000 Eritreans, 15 Italians and "provided a residence for another 12,000 part time workers and family members."[5] A well-known Italian business that was established for many years in Aligider was the Barattolo cotton plantation which was established in 1965 by Roberto Barattolo in a purchase from SIA.[6] This acquisition from the SIA allowed Barattolo to export knitwear to both Europe and the Middle East.[5] Aligider received significant damage from the sacking by Ethiopian forces.[2] Many of the Italian artifacts left from its time as a frontier village were destroyed in 2001 through Ethiopian military actions.[7] {{Coord|15|07|00|N|36|29|00|E|region:ER_type:city|display=title}}References1. ^1 {{Cite web|url = http://www.shabait.com/articles/nation-building/9870-teseney-sub-zone-economic-agricultural-and-multi-cultural-hub-part-i-|title = Teseney Sub-Zone: Economic, Agricultural and Multi-Cultural Hub|date = 15 June 2012|accessdate = 8 July 2015|website = Eritrea - Ministry of Information|publisher = |last = Ghebrehiwet|first = Kesete}} {{Eritrea-geo-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite book |title=Eritrea |last=Denison |first=Edward |publisher=Bradt Travel Guides |year=2007 |isbn=978-1-84162-171-5 |location=Guilford, Connecticut |pages=216–217 |edition=4th}} 3. ^{{cite book |title=Wake Up, Hanna!: Reintegration and Reconstruction Challenges for Post-War Eritrea |last=Mehreteab |first=Amanuel |publisher=The Red Sea Press, Inc. |year=2004 |isbn=1-56902-192-9 |location=Lawrenceville, New Jersey |pages=98}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url = http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/sitefactsheet.php?id=6230|title = Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas|date = 2001|accessdate = 8 July 2015|website = Bird Life International|publisher = |last = |first = }} 5. ^1 2 3 {{cite book |title=Historical Dictionary of Eritrea |last=Connell |first=Dan |publisher=Scarecrow Press, Inc. |year=2011 |isbn=978-0-8108-7505-0 |location=Lanham, Maryland |pages=62–64, 115 |edition=2nd |last2=Killion |first2=Tom}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url = http://dolcevitaeritrea.com/about3.html|title = Roberto Barattolo and the Eritrean Textile Industry|date = |accessdate = 8 July 2015|website = Dolce Vita: The Italian Lifestyle|publisher = |last = |first = }} 7. ^1 {{Cite web|url = http://www.eritrea.be/old/eritrea-tesseney.htm|title = Tessenei Eritrea|date = |accessdate = 8 July 2015|website = Etritrea|publisher = |last = |first = }} 1 : Villages in Eritrea |
