Fossil remains were initially identified as belonging to a snipe of the genus Gallinago, but a re-analysis of the bones in 1976 indicated that they belonged to a woodcock. It has more osteological similarities to Old World woodcock species than American woodcock species, a trait it shares with the extinct Hispaniolan woodcock (Scolopax brachycarpa). Both of these woodcocks may have belonged to a distinctive Caribbean insular radiation of woodcocks, all of which are now extinct.[1]Scolopax anthonyi had reduced wings compared to other species in the genus, indicating that it may have had a more terrestrial lifestyle. It likely lived in a forested habitat, as with extant members of the genus. Little is known about the cause for its extinction.[2] References1. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.researchgate.net/publication/283526222_A_new_species_of_Woodcock_Aves_Scolopacidae_Scolopax_from_Hispaniola_West_Indies|title=A new species of Woodcock (Aves: Scolopacidae: Scolopax) from Hispaniola, West Indies {{!}} Request PDF|website=ResearchGate|language=en|access-date=2018-11-22}} 2. ^{{Cite book|title=Extinct Birds|last=Hume|first=Julian P.|publisher=Bloomsbury Publishing|year=2017|isbn=978-1472937445|location=|pages=148}} 6 : Extinct birds of the Caribbean|Late Quaternary prehistoric birds|Birds of Puerto Rico|Birds described in 1920|Fossil taxa described in 1920|Scolopax |
