Tretyakov GalleryIn 1851, Tretyakov and his brother Pavel Tretyakov acquired a property on the right bank of the Moskva River to use as offices, also using the building to house their art collection, which became known as the Tretyakov Gallery.[4] Sergei's collection was smaller than his brother's, but also very valuable. The first work to be added to his collection was Alexey Bogolyubov's Ipatievsky Monastery near Kostroma.[2] He later began collecting primarily works from Western European artists, especially French romantics and realists.[2] On Sergei's death in 1892, both brothers' collections were donated to the Moscow city administrators.[3][4] The brothers' combined collections consisted of 1,287 paintings, 518 drawings and 9 sculptures by Russian artists, along with 75 paintings and eight drawings by European artists, mainly French and German masters of the late 19th century.[3] The value of the donated collections was estimated at 1,429,000 roubles.[3][4] The city converted the brothers' private showroom into a gallery accessible to the public,[4] free of charge.[2] The official opening of the Moscow City Gallery of Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov, as it was then named, took place on 15 August 1893, with over 700 visitors on the first day.[2] Other activitiesHe was also the chief of the Moscow municipal administration,[5] from 1876 to 1882.{{citation needed|date=January 2017}} References1. ^{{cite book|last1=Chilvers|first1=Ian|title=The Oxford Dictionary of Art and Artists|publisher=Oxford University Press|page=635|url=https://books.google.es/books?id=P906UFXIoMUC&pg=PA635&lpg=PA635&dq=sergei+tretyakov+moscow+municipal&source=bl&ots=-lMfFlRGcM&sig=k914fr5_DQ0oXCCDFXlvyihOjjw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjH9vGp0uPRAhWEtRQKHUPyDhI4ChDoAQgfMAI#v=onepage&q&f=false|accessdate=28 January 2017}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Tretyakov, Sergei}}{{Russia-bio-stub}}2. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite news|last1=Popova|first1=Anna|title=10 facts about the Tretyakov Gallery that even Russians don't know|url=http://rbth.com/arts/2016/05/21/10-facts-about-the-tretyakov-gallery-that-even-russians-dont-know_594963|accessdate=28 January 2017|work=Russia Beyond The Headlines|date=21 May 2016}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Donation of the Tretyakov Gallery to Moscow City 1892-1898|url=http://www.tretyakovgallery.ru/en/museum/history/gallery/1892_1898/|website=Tretyakov Gallery|accessdate=27 January 2017}} 4. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite book|editor1-last=Meyer|editor1-first=Andrea|editor2-last=Savoy|editor2-first=Benedicte|title=The Museum Is Open: Towards a Transnational History of Museums|date=1 January 2014|publisher=Walter de Gruyter|page=154|url=https://books.google.es/books?id=xhroBQAAQBAJ&pg=PA154&dq=Sergei+Mikhailovich+Tretyakov+gallery&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjnudrwx-PRAhWHaxQKHSmOBBIQ6AEIIzAA#v=onepage&q=Sergei%20Mikhailovich%20Tretyakov%20gallery&f=false|accessdate=28 January 2017}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Yudenkova|first1=Tatiana|title=Sergei Tretyakov: Aspects of a biography recovered|url=http://www.tretyakovgallerymagazine.com/articles/1-2010-26/sergei-tretyakov-aspects-biography-recovered|website=Tretyakov Gallery|accessdate=28 January 2017}} 6 : 1834 births|1892 deaths|Russian philanthropists|Russian art patrons|Tretyakov Gallery|19th-century philanthropists |
