Shalini Bharat[1] is Director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. Prior to this, she was the Acting Director after the retirement of Prof Parasuraman in February 2018[2]. She has been working with TISS for more than three decades now. A gold medalist in MA and a PhD holder from Allahabad University, Bharat joined TISS as a lecturer in 1984, and went on to become the first dean of the School of Health Systems Studies. Later, she was elevated to the role of Deputy Director (Academic), and then given the additional charge of Acting Director soon after resignation of her predecessor in February[3].She is also focused on resolving pending issues, foremost among them being a funds crunch[4]. Education and CareerShalini Bharat has a M.A and D.Phil in Psychology from Allahabad University. Bharat joined TISS in September 1984 as a lecturer and became a professor in July 2000. Prior to taking over as the Deputy Director (Academic) TISS, she was the first Dean of the School of Health Systems Studies and the National Coordinator of Global Fund Project – Saksham. She has been a member on the Mission Steering Group of National Rural Health Mission and on the Governing Board of National Health Systems Resource Centre, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. She is currently a Member on the Governing Body of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and associated with several other national bodies of the Government of India[5]. Awards and recognitionBharat is a gold medalist in MA from Allahabad University. She is recepeint of two gold medals for standing first in her postgraduate degree program of the University of Allahabd. She serves on the Scientific Advisory Committees and Technical Review Groups of many national and international organisations and research studies including ICMR, NACO, NIRRH, NARI, MGM Institute, Alliance India, and Ethics review committees of FMR and TISS. She served as Member, Mission Steering Group of National Rural Health Mission, Government of India (2007-2013) and Member of the NHSRC (NRHM’s technical group), Ministry of H&FW, GoI (2007-2012). She was a member of the Independent Review Group for review of national HIV/AIDS program of Papua New Guinea from 2007 to 2012. Currently she is Board member of AIDS Alliance, India[6]. Academic contributionBharat has worked extensively in the field of HIV/AIDS and wrote several articles in identifying stigmas, gaps and recommendation highlighting the current scenario of Health Systems in India. Her work has been published by some of the recognized journals and publication houses in the field of health[7].
