Replacing Nantou, it was from 1953 to 1979 the centre of Bao'an.[1]

History

Earliest known recorded mention of the name Shenzhen could date from 1410, during the Ming dynasty.[2] In Qing dynasty Kangxi year's version of {{ill|Xin'an Xianzhi|zh|新安县志}} ({{zh|t=新安縣志|s=新安县志|l=Xin'an County History}}),[3] Shenzhen market ({{zh|t=深圳墟|s=深圳墟}}) was on of the 28 market towns of the Xin'an county (Bao'an County), along with Nantou and other places, such as Tai Po, which now belongs to Shenzhen City or Hong Kong S.A.R.

For half a year in 1899, Shenzhen was occupied by British forces under the command of Henry Arthur Blake, the then-governor of Hong Kong. It was only after the arrival of the Kowloon–Canton Railway in 1911, that the town became strategically important, being the last stop of the railway's Chinese section. [4]

Siyue Study Hall ({{zh|s=思月书院|p=Sīyuè Shūyuàn|j=si1 jyut6 syu1 jyun2|cy=sī yuht syū yún|l=In-memory of moon study hall}}) in Shenzhen was used as a hostel for Hong Kong workers leaving the colony during the Canton–Hong Kong strike of 1925. A number casinos, the largest of which being Shum Chun Casino, were established by the family of Chen Jitang in the market town in 1931. While only in operation until 1936, they significantly increased KCR's passenger traffic to and from Shenzhen.[5][6]

From 1941 to their 1945 surrender, Shenzhen, along with much of Southern China, was occupied by the Japanese, who used it as a base for the occupation of Hong Kong.[7]

1979 onwards

In 1979, Bao'an County was renamed Shenzhen after the town and was made a city with a population that has since grown to over ten million. The contemporary location of Shenzhen roughly corresponds to the area around Dongmen (东门), a shopping district named after the former East Gate of the town, and one that has seen some of the earliest urban developments. Much of the original town has since been demolished to make way for such developments, yet the general street grid largely remains.[8]
